Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. - LaGrange swept Gettysburg and Spalding on Saturday at the NFCA Division III Lead Off Classic at the South Commons Softball Complex. The Panthers (5-7) walked off with a 7-6 8-inning win over Gettysburg, then routed Spalding 10-1.
Game 1: LaGrange 7, Gettysburg 6 (8 Innings)
The Panthers overcame an early deficit and were down a run in the final inning before rallying to beat the Bullets. Gettysburg had beaten Tufts and LeTourneau on Friday, who the Panthers had lost to.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning off
Claire Chamberlain (1-4), Chamberlain surrendered just two runs, one unearned, over the final six innings.
Kayla Helms got the Panthers back in the game in the bottom of the second.
Alexa Gonzalez reached on an error to start the inning and went to second on
Zoe Veres' base hit. Helms followed with a line drive home run over the left field fence to make it 4-3.
The Panthers went into the sixth trailing 5-3. Veres and Helms had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Pinch-hitter
Lexi Mitchell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-runner
Hannah Barnett and Helms came home on
Abby Vanhoose's base hit up the middle to tie the game 5-5.
Gettysburg regained the lead with a run in the top of the eighth. The Panthers answered with the winning rally in their half of the eighth. Helms was placed on second and
Breonn Newbille entered the game as a pinch runner. She moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Addie Grace Dennis. Vanhoose's bunt single scored Newbille with the tying run.
Jaselyn Couch reached on an error to load the bases for Chamberlain. The junior laced a single over second base into right field as Vanhoose trotted home with the winning run.
The Panthers had 12 hits in the game. Helms and Vanhoose each had three hits.
Game 2 LaGrange 10, Spalding 1
The Panthers never trailed in routing the Golden Eagles in the day's final game.
LC jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first.
Cannon Ramsey's RBI double scored Chamberlain with the game's first run. Veres then crushed a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers made it 5-0 in the second. Chamberlain had a two-run single in the inning. LC put the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the 10-1 final.
Jenna Yeary (2-1) got the win in the circle. She only allowed the one run, struck out six in pitching a complete game.
