LAGRANGE, Ga. – The LaGrange College softball team moved one step closer to clinching a prime playoff spot after sweeping their double-header against visiting Asbury University in Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) action on Saturday at the LC Softball Complex in LaGrange, Georgia, winning 6-5 and 6-3. The Panthers run their record to 14-20 and their CCS record to 9-5. At press time, LaGrange was tied with Piedmont University for third place in the conference standings with just two conference games remaining.
GAME 1 – ASBURY 5, LAGRANGE 6
- Tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, LaGrange sophomore shortstop Cannon Ramsey (Tallahassee, Fla.) led off with a single to right center. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Kayla Helms (Dallas, Ga.) put Ramsey on third with one out. Freshman designated player Addison Gibboney (Kennesaw, Ga.) then stepped to the plate and hit a walk-off RBI sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Ramsey for the winning run as the Panthers' bench exploded in celebration.
- Ramsey finished the game going three-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored. It was a career-high in hits for the rookie, making her first start at shortstop in several weeks.
- Gibboney drove in three of the Panthers' six runs on the day, while sophomore catcher Emma Seymour (Carrollton, Ga.) went one-for-three with an RBI.
- Senior pitcher Jenna Yeary (Loganville, Ga.) picked up her seventh win of the season, striking out nine Eagles and allowing just two earned runs over seven innings. Freshman third baseman Bailey Gamel (Dallas, Ga.) had her first career hit, the coming on a double.
GAME 2 – ASBURY 3, LAGRANGE 6
- Game two saw the Panthers pounce on the Eagles in the bottom of the second when Seymour hit a two-RBI single followed by another two-RBI single from senior pitcher Claire Chamberlain (Rome, Ga.) to put LaGrange up 4-0.
- Clinging to a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers got some much-needed insurance when freshman left fielder Bri Totty (Hurtsboro, Ala.) doubled to right-center, plating freshman right fielder Anabelle Sanchez (Marietta, Ga.) and junior pinch runner Brooke Coleman (Hiram, Ga.) and providing all the offense LaGrange would need.
- Chamberlain allowed just one earned run in seven innings, striking out five Eagles. Totty and Gibboney both had two hits on the day.
