Maryville Tops Softball to Open CCS Playoffs

OXFORD, Ala. – The LaGrange College softball team lost 7-2 to fourth-seeded Maryville College in Game One of the opening round of the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Championship Tournament on Wednesday at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. With the loss, the fifth-seeded Panthers run their record to 14-23 and will play in the loser's bracket of Thursday's Quarterfinals when they will be back at Choccolocco at 7:00 p.m. local time to play the loser of Game Four tomorrow which will see the second-seeded Hawks of Huntingdon College face the third-seeded Lions of Piedmont University.       
  • The Scots of Maryville struck first in the bottom of the third inning when junior third baseman Ryleigh Maples (Maryville, Tenn.) hit an RBI single to right to give her team the 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers equalized in the top of the fourth when LaGrange senior pitcher Jenna Yeary (Loganville, Ga.) stepped to the plate with one out and runners on second and third and reached on an RBI fielder's choice to drive in freshman leftfielder Kamie Gibby (McDonough, Ga.), who had earlier reached on a double. 
  • Still tied in the top of the fifth, the Panthers took the lead on an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman Kayla Helms (Dallas, Ga.) that drove in sophomore shortstop Cannon Ramsey (Tallahassee, Fla.) as LaGrange went up 2-1.
  • The Scots tied it in the bottom of the fifth off another RBI single by Maples. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Maryville added five more runs – including two off a two-RBI double from Maples – to pull away.
  • LaGrange freshman right fielder Bri Totty (Hurtsboro, Ala.) went three-for-three at the plate for the Panthers.
UP NEXT
LaGrange is back on the field on Thursday when they play the loser of Game Four featuring the second-seeded Hawks of Huntingdon College face the third-seeded Lions of Piedmont University.
