Women's Soccer: Panthers battle to end in 2-1 double-overtime setback to Brevard

Box Score

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Williamson scored the equalizer for the LaGrange College women's soccer team during the 84th minute Sunday afternoon, but Brevard netted the game-winning goal with 3:38 left in the second overtime to secure a 2-1 victory on Panther Field.

This was the first double-overtime game for the Panthers (1-4-0, 0-2-0 USA South) since Sept. 28, 2019. Senior goalkeeper Maurie White recorded a career high in saves, turning away 15-of-17 shots.

"It was a fantastic performance by the ladies today," said Head Coach Kennet Fosuhene. "It is a heartbreaking way to lose a game. We fought hard to win, but fell short in double overtime. These things happen in soccer. We will learn from 100% of this game and the team will grow."

The Tornados (2-5-2, 1-1-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead during the 52nd minute on a goal by Tae Brown. With less than seven minutes on the clock in regulation, senior defender Taylor Hamm played a tremendous ball into the 18-yard box off a free kick from 40 yards out. Williamson was able to redirect the service into the back of the net, evening the game at 1-1.

Ashley Royster tallied the game-winner for Brevard off a through ball by Justine St. Louis in the 107th minute. Goalkeeper Cam De Silva earned the win for the Tornados, stopping five shots.

Royster led all players with 10 shots and Brown led the way in shots on goal (5). For the Panthers, Williamson and sophomore forward Sydney Saul recorded a combined four shots, including three on net.

Hamm served as the last line of defense for the Panthers in the 14th minute, registering a team save by stopping and clearing a shot from point-blank range by Alyssa Hetherington. Williamson has two goals and one assist on the season, while Hamm has two goals and two assists.

Brevard held a 46-9 lead in total shots and an 18-6 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors led the corner kicks statistic, 11-4.

The Panthers will play Agnes Scott in a USA South game Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Decatur, Georgia.
