Box Score Senior goalkeeper Maurie White made a game-high seven saves in 70:58 of relief action for the LaGrange College women's soccer team during a 5-0 setback to Covenant Saturday afternoon on Panther Field.
The game served as the USA South opener for the Panthers (1-3-0, 0-1-0) and Scots (4-4-1, 1-0-0). Rachel Wall led the charge for Covenant, scoring a hat trick and tallying one assist. Kailey Burrell finished with one goal and one assist for the visitors.
"The slow start we had really determined the game," said LaGrange College Women's Soccer Head Coach Kennet Fosuhene. "We conceded three goals in the first 20 minutes. It is always an uphill battle when you start that slow. I give credit to the girls because we responded well in the second half. We put this game behind us and go again tomorrow."
Burrell opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and then Wall converted a penalty kick during the 14th minute, giving Covenant a 2-0 lead. Wall scored again less than six minutes later off a through ball by Burrell. Abby White found the back of the net with 7:30 left in the first half off a feed by Mae Pierce, sending the Scots into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Wall ended the scoring in the 65th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Leila Moss started the game for LC and made four saves in the opening 19:02 before leaving with an injury. During the fifth minute, Moss made a sensational save on a rocket from the right side of the 18-yard box by Wall.
Covenant led the shots category, 26-8, and held a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal. Lauren Williamson and Christina Shanahan recorded a combined four shots for the hosts, with three being on net. Wall and Burrell combined for 15 shots, including 11 on target.
The Panthers will host Brevard in a USA South matchup Sunday at 2 p.m. on Panther Field.
