Box Score Junior captain Madison Demkowski and freshman Nikki Longmoore of the LaGrange College women's soccer team scored two goals apiece, as the Panthers ended the 2021 season with a 5-0 triumph over USA South-rival Wesleyan Monday on Panther Field.
Longmoore tallied her first collegiate goal and junior captain Sydney Dailey scored on a penalty kick for the Panthers (3-5, 3-5 USA South). Senior Taylor Hamm, sophomore Jordan Alexis and freshman Anna Brown each finished with an assist.
Goalkeepers Leila Moss and Maurie White combined for the shutout against the Wolves (2-8, 2-6 USA South). Moss earned her second collegiate win, logging 79:09 in net. During the 52nd minute, Moss made an outstanding stop on a rocket from the right side of the 18-yard box by Lesley Godoy.
Freshman Lauren Williamson was a force in the midfield, as she won numerous 50-50 balls and dictated the pace of play. Hamm and freshman Sydney Saul created some great chances with superb crosses into the box.
LC ended the season with a 3-2 home record. The Panthers also defeated Berea, 3-1, and Agnes Scott, 4-0.
"This was a very gratifying way to end a pretty tough year," said LaGrange College women's soccer head coach Fred Wagenaar. "The ladies played so hard and well. They were tremendously supportive of each other. It showed in the play and score. They have improved and matured as players and people over the course of this year. I could not be prouder of each one."
Demkowski scored the game-winning goal in the fifth minute, as she buried a shot into the back of the net off a corner kick by Hamm. Dailey sent the Panthers into halftime with a two-goal cushion. She drew a foul in the box and buried the penalty kick into the bottom left.
Demkowski scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 58th minute. Freshman Leia Avery's shot was deflected by a Wesleyan defender, and then Demkowski blasted the rebound into the back of net, pushing the lead to 3-0.
With 10:51 remaining in regulation, Longmoore scored her first goal off a tremendous through ball down the right side by freshman Anna Brown. Less than five minutes later, Longmoore stuck again, applying the finishing touch to a corner kick by Alexis.
The Panthers held a 30-8 lead in shots and a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. Demkowski finished with game-highs of eight shots and five on net. Dailey and junior Zoe Watts combined for 12 shots and six on target.
