Box Score Sophomore goalkeeper Maurie White made a career-high 12 saves for the LaGrange College women's soccer team Wednesday evening on Panther Field, as the Panthers fought to the final whistle in a 1-0 overtime loss to Huntingdon.
White stopped 12-of-13 shots for a .923 save percentage. She made five saves in the first half, and then another seven in the second half. Alexis Louk scored the game-winning goal 3:21 into the first overtime on a free kick for the Hawks (4-2, 4-1 USA South).
The Panthers (1-4, 1-4 USA South) competed the final 77:08 down one player, but the team's effort was outstanding. LC battled for every loose ball and broke up numerous rushes by Huntingdon.
HIGHLIGHTS:
White made an outstanding save on a rocket by Madison Tryon from the left edge of the 18-yard box 21 seconds into the second half, keeping the game scoreless.
Senior Taylor Hamm made a superb defensive read with 24 minutes left in regulation. She headed a cross by Kirstin Hayes out of danger inside the box.
One minute later, sophomore Christina Shanahan got the Panthers out of a precarious situation in their own box. She kicked the ball off a Huntingdon defender out of bounds for a goal kick. Shanahan rose to the occasion again in the 75th minute, breaking up a rush by the Hawks with a strong clear.
The Panthers generated some quality scoring chances late in the second half. Junior captain Sydney Dailey ripped a shot from beyond the box with 17:31 on the clock, but the attempt went over the top of the net.
LC's best chance came in the 82nd minute. Freshman midfielder Lauren Williamson made a run down the right side of the pitch, but her shot trickled just wide of the left post.
WHAT THEY SAID:
Head Coach Fred Wagenaar: "I believe this game will live in the memories of our student-athletes for the rest of their lives. To take a very good team such as Huntingdon to a full-time 0-0 score line, playing a man down for most of the game, is nothing short of remarkable. I have never seen a team play with such harmony and as gutsy as can be at the same time. The players deserve all accolades that a person can think of. I cannot put into words how proud I am of the team tonight."
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Junior forward Jasmine Middleton gave the Panthers tremendous minutes off the bench in the second half. She played with non-stop energy and applied relentless on-ball pressure.
Freshman midfielder Leia Avery made her third consecutive start. She continued to make things happen for the Panthers and was aggressive on 50-50 balls.
