Box Score Junior captain Sydney Dailey finished with a goal and an assist for the LaGrange College women's soccer team in a 3-1 season-opening victory over Berea at Callaway Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman midfielder Anna Brown netted her first goal in a Panther uniform, as LC (1-0, 1-0 USA South) defeated Berea (0-1, 0-1 USA South) for the second consecutive season.
"It was exciting to finally be able to play on the field as a LaGrange College Panther," said Brown. "I am proud of the hard work and determination our team has shown. I am thankful for the victory."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dailey put the Panthers on the board in the third minute, sending a penalty kick into the bottom left corner. During the fifth minute, LC extended its lead to 2-0, as senior Taylor Hamm's corner kick found the back of the net after deflecting over a Berea defender.
Gabrielle Scott cut the Panthers' lead to 2-1, scoring in the sixth minute off a throw-in by Alanis Daugherty. The hosts regained a two-goal advantage with 6:52 left in the first half. Dailey kicked an exceptional through ball to Brown, who floated a shot over the goalkeeper's head from the right side of the 18-yard box.
During the 25th minute of the game, sophomore midfielder Christina Shanahan made an oustanding pass from the center line to Dailey in stride heading toward the box, but the midfielder's shot went just wide right.
Brown, Leia Avery, Lauren Williamson, Nikki Longmoore and Sydney Saul made their collegiate debuts.
WHAT THEY SAID:
Panthers Head Coach Fred Wagenaar: "The team and I are thankful we finally got to play a game. The ladies have pushed through many trials, such as quarantines, bad weather and waterlogged fields. Despite all of it, they have always remained positive. I am proud of how they came out to play on Saturday. I would like to thank the parents and LaGrange College for the support our program has received."
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Brown posted a game-high six shots and Dailey attempted five, with the two combining for four shots on net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maurie White turned away 9-of-10 shots for her third collegiate victory. LC held an 18-12 advantage in shots.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Dailey has recorded 12 goals, nine assists, 33 points and four game-winning goals in her brilliant career. Saturday marked the fifth time in Dailey's Panther career that she has recorded at least one goal and one assist in the same game.
Hamm posted her first college game-winner and White tied her career-high with nine saves.
