Women's Soccer: Panthers score 4-1 win at Mississippi University for Women

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Breanna Wright and Leia Avery recorded their first collegiate goal and assist, respectively, for the LaGrange College women's soccer team during a 4-1 triumph at Mississippi University for Women Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (3-5-1, 1-3-1 USA South) received goals from three different student-athletes and five players recorded at least one point. Senior captain and midfielder Sydney Dailey finished with one goal and one assist. LaGrange avenged two recent losses to Mississippi University for Women (4-6-0), as the Owls prevailed, 7-1, on Oct. 7, 2018, and 2-0 on Sept. 24, 2019.

"The ladies played well today," said LaGrange College Women's Soccer Head Coach Kennet Fosuhene. "We took the momentum that we got from the previous game and brought it into this one. A quick start and an early goal settled us down on a difficult pitch to play on. I am proud of the ladies and the effort today. We have a big game on Wednesday, as we are looking to continue the push for the postseason."

The Panthers went on the scoreboard during the fourth minute thanks to an own goal by the Owls off a botched header. Dailey buried her ninth goal of the season less than two minutes later, giving the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.

Avery and Dailey set up Wright for a goal with 23:49 remaining in the first half, giving LC a three-goal cushion. Leah Anderson scored for the Owls during the 28th minute, cutting LaGrange's advantage to 3-1 heading into halftime.

The Panthers ended the scoring with 20:12 left in regulation, as sophomore midfielder Lauren Williamson scored her third goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Leila Moss earned her first win of the season, making three saves in the opening 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Maurie White turned away five shots and did not allow a single goal in 45 minutes of relief.

The Owls held a 16-10 advantage in total shots, including a 9-7 lead in shots on goal. Each team attempted four corner kicks.

Dailey and Bower combined for a total of five shots, with three being on target. Dailey ranks first in the USA South in assists (7), tied for third in goals (9) and third in points (25).

The Panthers will travel to Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. USA South game Wednesday in Macon, Georgia.
