Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore forward Erica Bower of the LaGrange College women's soccer team scored the equalizer with 5:22 left in regulation during a 2-2 draw in USA South action at Huntingdon Thursday evening.
The Panthers (2-5-1, 1-3-1 USA South) snapped their five-game losing streak to the Hawks (6-5-1, 2-1-1). LaGrange received its first point against Huntingdon since a 0-0 draw at Panther Field on Oct. 19, 2016.
"What a great game of soccer," said LaGrange College Women's Soccer Head Coach Kennet Fosuhene. "The effort, resilience and fight we showed were unmatched. It is easy when you concede a goal as late as we did to fold and think the game is over, but we did not. Our performances in recent games have been good in moments. We talked about going one better in the pregame and putting together a full performance. I am proud of the ladies tonight."
LC is in a playoff push. The top-five teams from the conference's West Division will qualify for the USA South Tournament. The Panthers are currently in sixth with four points. LaGrange has conference games remaining on the road against Wesleyan, Berea and Maryville.
Sophomore goalkeeper Leila Moss was superb, making a career and game-high 10 saves. The Suwanee, Georgia, native came through in the clutch, turning aside four shots in the 20 minutes of overtime.
LaGrange opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first half. Sophomore forward Sydney Saul stole the ball near the midfield line, and then senior midfielder Sydney Dailey made a run down the right attacking side. Saul received the ball back from Dailey on the edge of the 18-yard box. She dribbled around a Huntingdon defender and buried a shot into the right side of the net.
During the 21st minute, Madison Tryon knotted the score at 1-1 for the Hawks, assisted by Brielle Landry. With 2:08 left in the opening half, Moss made a tremendous stop on a shot from the right side of the box by Allison Fisher.
Landry put the Hawks in front, 2-1, during the 81st minute. Bower responded and forced overtime with a goal in the 85th minute.
Huntingdon led the shots category, 19-11, including a 13-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks held a 9-2 advantage in the corner kicks statistic. Dailey and Bower combined for seven total shots and five on goal for the visitors.
Dailey ranks first in the USA South in assists (5), third in points (21) and tied for third in goals (8). Bower ranks second on the team in goals (4), while Saul recorded her second tally of the season Thursday.
The Panthers will play Mississippi University for Women Saturday at 2 p.m. in Columbus, Mississippi.
