Women's Soccer: Panthers cruise to fifth consecutive victory with 4-0 win over Mary Baldwin

Box Score

Sophomores Dynasty Burchett and Zoe Watts scored two goals apiece for the LaGrange College women's soccer team during a 4-0 win over Mary Baldwin University on Saturday afternoon at Panther Field.

The Panthers (6-3) have won five straight games with four being shutouts. During that stretch, LaGrange has outscored its opponents, 16-2. The Fighting Squirrels dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the USA South Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Panthers sophomore goalkeeper Emma Smith made a big-time save 12 minutes into the game, turning aside a shot by Julissa Gamboa, which was headed for the top-right corner of the goal.
  • Burchett put the Panthers on the board during the 15th minute, burying a shot from the right side of the box during a rush down field. The sophomore standout struck again 1:03 later, finishing off a through ball from sophomore midfielder Sydney Dailey. The shot had enough velocity to find the back of the net even after Squirrels goalkeeper Anyka Wilkin got a hand on the attempt.
  • In the 27th minute, Watts gave LaGrange a three-goal cushion, looping a shot over the goalkeeper's head.
  • LaGrange was back on the attack in the 28th minute, as senior midfielder Maura Webb placed a through ball to Dailey in stride, but her shot was denied.
  • Watts ended the scoring in the 55th minute, picking the top-right corner of the net. Watts nearly earned a hat trick 1:16 after the tally off a feed by Dailey, but her attempt went just wide right.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Panthers Head Coach Fred Wagenaar: "The backline played very well on Saturday, holding Mary Baldwin's offense to a minimal amount of scoring opportunities. Our biggest positive was the overall team possession, especially by the midfielders. We received some great shooting by Dynasty Burchett and Zoe Watts."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Panthers have posted six wins in their first nine games, which is the most the program has totaled in a single season since 2014. LaGrange still has 10 regular-season games remaining.
  • Smith (4-3) earned the win in net with four saves, while Panthers sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Tyler slammed the door shut with one stop over the final 11:03.
  • Dailey leads the USA South in assists (6) and ranks second in points (14), while Watts sits in a tie for second in the conference and leads the Panthers with five goals. Burchett recorded the second multi-goal game of her career.
  • The Panthers led the shots category, 25-8, and held a commanding 13-5 lead in shots on goal. Watts, Dailey and Burchett each tallied six shots, combining for a total of nine shots on target.

UP NEXT:

  • The Panthers will look to stay in the win column with a 4 p.m. matchup against Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday at Panther Field.
