LAGRANGE, Ga. – Selected for the NCAA Championship Tournament for the first time in school history, the LaGrange College women's basketball team learned Monday afternoon that they will travel to Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin where they will play the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in the first round of the tournament.
The Panthers of LaGrange College (20-7, 14-2 CCS) qualified for the tournament this past Saturday where they won the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Championship for the first time in school history with a 69-62 win over Belhaven University. LaGrange had earned the number one seed in their conference tournament, clinching a first round bye and home court advantage in the semifinals and finals.
Senior guard
Laila Battle (Smyrna, Ga.) has led the Panthers all season long, being voted CCS Player of the Year, CCS Defensive Player of the Year and All-CCS First Team. Battle continued to lead LaGrange in the postseason, as she was named the Most Valuable Player of the CCS All-Tournament Team. Battle currently leads the team with 17.4 points per game to go along with 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals.
Senior power forward
Amanda Mclendon (Orlando, Fla.) was a double-double producer all season long for the Panthers, as she joined Battle on the All-Conference first team and the All-Tournament Team. Mclendon is averaging 14.3 points with 7.7 rebounds per game.
LaGrange head coach
Steve Kenner was voted CCS Coach of the Year in just his first year guiding the program, leading the Panthers to their best season in school history.
The Eagles of UW - La Crosse (18-9, 9-5 WIAC) won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship with a 52-49 upset win over top-seeded UW - Oshkosh this past Friday, claiming their first-ever WIAC Championship.
The Eagles are led by
Grace Knupp (10.0 points per game) and
Molly Janke (9.9 points per game).
