LAGRANGE, Ga. - The LaGrange College Baseball Team (0-3) returns home this weekend (Feb. 14-16) to host the LaGrange College Classic, inviting the likes of #20 Adrian College, Berry College (Receiving Votes) and Pfeiffer University into the fold.
The Teams
The Panthers opened their season against a tough field of teams at the Centenary College Gents Classic this past weekend. Despite solid hitting and serviceable starting pitching, LaGrange was ultimately outpaced in all three games, dropping contests to Rhodes College, McMurry University and hosts Centenary College. With the chance to rectify the slow start to the season this weekend, LC will look to set the record straight within the friendly confines of Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium.
Adrian entered the season ranked #20, as they open the regular season this weekend in LaGrange. They will take on Berry College on Friday night, followed by a pair of games Saturday against Pfeiffer University and hosts LC. In 2024, the Bulldogs posted an impressive 33-16 record as they found themselves deep in the postseason, making it as far as the NCAA Super Regionals. With their season coming to an end after a 2-1 series loss to Randolph-Macon College, they will certainly aim to make a splash as early as Friday when they head down south to compete in the LC Classic.
Berry heads into this weekend feeling good after a 2-1 series win over Emory University, besting the Eagles by scoring a combined 45 runs in the final two games. The Vikings' 2024 campaign saw an impressive 28-14 effort. After sweeping Sewanee University in the final three games of the regular season, the Vikings dropped back-to-back to the Tigers in the SAA Tournament to effectively conclude their 2024 season.
As for Pfeiffer, they will similarly open their season at the LC Classic. The Falcons fought hard in 2024 to stay afloat, ending the season with an even .500 win percentage at 21-21. Winning four of their last six games in the regular season, they were able to pick up a pair of wins in the USA South Tournament before being eliminated by Brevard in a heartbreaking 5-3 final. They will look start their season in the positive as they face off with the Panthers in game one on Friday.
Players to Watch
David Smigelski led the Panthers this past weekend, ripping four hits and a homerun for a slugging percentage of .778 and a 1.361 OPS.
Nic Bruder returns this season for Adrian after a phenomenal freshman season. Bruder led the Bulldogs with a .385 batting average in 2024, racking up 77 hits and 40 RBI's in the process.
Cole Porter will most likely take the mound this weekend for the Vikings. Porter currently serves as one of Berry's aces so far this year, allowing just two runs and three hits with three strikeouts to his name in 3.2 innings of ball.
Wilson Lohrer headlines the Falcons' batting lineup this weekend. Leading the team with a .394 batting average with 71 hits and 39 RBI's last season, the Charlotte, NC native will have his sights set on a hot start this weekend.
