Panthers Baseball splits Saturday Nichols doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LC Baseball finishes the day with an 7-3 overall record after beating Nichols 10-4 in game one and dropping game two 12-11. The Panthers close out their three-game series versus Nichols tomorrow (March 3) at 11:30 a.m.

Game one details
Senior Dalton Brooks began the day pitching for the Panthers. Brooks is 2-0 on the season and has posted an .84 ERA. The Bison of Nichols were the first team to strike in game one. In the top of first, a drive to center field brought in the Bison base runner on third. After the first inning, Nichols held a one-point advantage. In the following inning, Nichols added another point when Dalton hit a Bison batter with a pitch while the bases were loaded. The top of the second finished with the visitors up 2-0. With two outs in the second, Hunter Brooks secured his first triple of the year when he crushed the ball into deep right field. Brooks then was hit home on a single by Adam Dorn. After two, the Bison led 2-1. In the third, the Panthers jumped out to a 3-2 lead when Curt Bonner's hit placed the ball over the head of the second baseman. This great placement allowed Rhett Mixon and Jackson McElvy to score. LC continued their hitting run when Adam Dorn's hit squeaked through the hands of the Bison third baseman and brought in Curt Bonner and Colby Zinser. After three innings, the Panthers held a 5-2 lead. The game stayed at 5-2 until an overthrow to second base let the Bison base runner on third to score. Going into the bottom of the fifth, LC found themselves up 5-3. In the sixth, Colby Zinser made an outstanding play at third base. In order to snag the Bison hit flying above him, Zinser jumped up and extended his body to get an acrobatic LC out. On the following play, catcher Curt Bonner closed out the top of the inning when he threw out the base runner stealing to second. In the top of the seventh, senior Benjamin Epperley relieved Dalton Brooks of his pitching duties. Still in the seventh, Nichols cut the LC lead to 5-4. The Panthers escaped the top of the inning by getting an LC double play at second and first. Going into the eighth, sophomore Eli Folds came in to pitch for the Panthers. In the bottom of the inning, LC extended their lead to 6-4 on a Colby Zinser hit to center, which brought in Rhett Mixon. Still in the eighth, the Panthers added two more runs on a Noah Preuer single to center that drove home two Panthers. To wrap the LC win up with a bow, Coy Phillips and Adam Dorn hit two more Panthers home to extend the LC lead to 10-4. Sophomore Tyson Harnage closed out game one on the mound for LC. The Panthers held on to win game one 10-4.

The Panther pitchers
In seven innings pitched with having faced 32 batters, senior Dalton Brooks struck out four batters and allowed nine hits and four runs.
Senior Benjamin Epperley pitched one inning and allowed only one hit.
In one inning pitched, sophomore Eli Folds did not give up a hit or run.
Sophomore Tyson Harnage closed out the game for the Panthers. In the ninth, he struck out two batters.

Game two details
Sophomore Eduardo Peralta started on the mound in game two of today's doubleheader. Peralta is 1-1 and has struck out 10 batters this season. In the first inning, the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jackson McElvy strolled home after the Bison catcher lost a wild pitch in the dirt. Colby Zinser continued to hit anything thrown his way in game two. With his first at bat, Zinser singled to right field, which brought in Rhett Mixon. Adam Dorn would go on to hit Zinser home on a sacrifice fly RBI. The Panthers finished the first inning up 3-0. The game stayed at 3-0 until the Bison pitcher walked Fletcher Hislop, hit Hunter Brooks, then walked Russell Clifton with the bases loaded in the third. These mistakes extended the Panthers lead to 6-0. Still in the third inning, Jackson McElvy hit Fletcher Hislop home with a single. Rhett Mixon continued the huge Panther third inning by hitting a double to left which brought in two more LC base runners. The Panthers still were not done with scoring in the third. Jorge Fragoso came up next for LC and absolutely crushed the ball past the first baseman. This single line drive allowed Rhett Mixon to score. After three innings, the Panthers were up 10-0. In the fourth, the Bison scored two runs, cutting the Panthers lead to 10-2. In the sixth, junior Nash Evans replaced Peralta on the mound. Still in the sixth, the Panthers extended their lead to 11-2 after a Panther was hit when the bases were loaded. The Bison of Nichols came alive in the seventh inning. From what felt like out of nowhere, the Bison had cut the Panther lead to 11-7. In this inning, Nash Evans was replaced on the mound by freshman Issac Griffin. Griffin stayed in until he was relieved by senior Jack Richards in the same inning. The LC pitcher carousel continued to rotate for the Panthers in the seventh. Richards was replaced by sophomore Eli Folds. The top of the seventh would end with the game tied at 11-11 after the Bison scored nine runs. Going into the ninth, the game was still tied at 11-11. Tyson Harnage came in to relieve Folds on the mound. The Bison would take a 12-11 lead on a double to left that brought in a base runner. Sadly, this was just enough for the Bison to steal a win over the Panthers.
