The LaGrange College Panthers return to Callaway Stadium to face off against the Pride of Greensboro College in a Homecoming conference contest this Saturday (Oct. 26) at 1 p.m.
Scouting Report
Last weekend (Oct. 19),
the Panthers improved to 3-3 (3-1 USA South) after beating Brevard College 26-21 on the road. The last time LC Football won consecutive games and achieved three wins in a single season was in 2019, while 2017 marked the team's most recent three-conference win season.Â
Freshman tight end
Mychal Stillwell earned his second straight USA South Offensive Rookie of the Week honors after he led the Panthers with six catches and a career-high 85 yards in the victory over BC. Through six games, Stillwell has caught 19 passes for 224 yards. Senior wide receiver
Jasharie Anderson leads the team in both receiving yards (320) and touchdowns (3). The LC top-target this season has been junior wideout
Ashton Bryant. In six appearances, the Athens, Georgia native has hauled in a team-high 26 catches for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running the offense and delivering crisp passes to this unit is the talented sophomore quarterback
Henry Brodnax. The QB has completed 91 of his 168 passes (54%) for 1011 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. Carrying the rock for the Panthers is senior back
Goldman Butler VI. Known around the league for his brutal running style, Butler has continued to be a key Panther playmaker. On 119 carries, the big back has accounted for 496 yards (4.2 average) and five scores.Â
Turnovers and touchdowns have been the bread and butter for Panthers defense this year. In six games, LaGrange has generated 14 turnovers, with three returned for touchdowns, ranking the team first in the USA South and eighth in the nation for scoring defense. Sophomore defensive backs
Jaden Sanders and
Keyon Stoutemire have snagged a team-high two picks, and junior defensive end
Denver Griffis leads the team with a pair of fumble recoveries. Commanding the defense is graduate student linebacker
Desmond Fogle. The fast and physical standout leads LC with 48 tackles in addition to 4.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Sophomore linebacker
Dezmond Jones has secured a team-high seven TFL, while freshman linebacker
Ched Smith leads the unit with four sacks.
Brandon Matson earned USA South Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time this season following an outstanding performance against Brevard. Matson placed four punts inside the Tornados 20 with two stopping at the seven yard line. One of these punts set up the LC block team with the Panthers first safety of the season.Â
The Pride of Greensboro College currently holds a 1-5 (1-3 USA South) record with their lone win coming against Southern Virginia University (Sept. 28).Â
Through six games, GC has divided the time at quarterback between junior Jayden Morrison and freshman De'yon Cannon. In Morrison's five appearances, he has completed 32 of his 85 passes (38%) for 517 yards, six interceptions and four touchdowns. While the two quarterbacks' statistics are similar, Cannon has put up slightly better numbers. In four games, he completed 39 of his 67 passes (58%) for 605 yards, five interceptions and four touchdowns. The go-to receiver has been sophomore wideout Ja'Shawn Harris. Harris has pulled in 12 catches for 237 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. At running back for the Pride is sophomore Tareek Smith. Smith has rushed for 310 yards and four touchdowns on 64 carries, which averages out to a solid 4.8 yards per attempt.Â
Leading the Pride in tackles with 48 is senior linebacker Max Steele. Presumably the captain of the defense, Steele has been a consistent force for Greensboro since joining the team (2021). In 36 games played, he has made a total of 348 tackles, 35 TFL and six sacks. Another player to watch out for is sophomore defensive back Larry Jones. The 2023 USA South Defensive Rookie of the Year has made 50 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions.Â
Key to the GameÂ
The Panthers cannot come out flat footed and expect to win. The Pride of GC proved their scoring ability with a 42-23 victory over SVU and showed they can limit offensive success by holding Guilford College to just ten points. LC needs to start fast and keep their foot on the pedal to secure this in-conference win.
When and WhereÂ
Kickoff in Callaway Stadium is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday.
