Baseball: Panthers hit three home runs in downing Covenant 10-5

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange won its fourth straight, downing Covenant 10-5 on Thursday. The Panthers (4-1) hit three home runs in the game and scored in double digits for the third time in the last four games.

Jack Layrisson hit his team-leading third home run, while Cael Chatham and E.J. Churchich both hit their second home runs of the season in the game. Trey Pearce had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. LC finished the game with 10 hits.

Baley Coleman (2-0) went six innings to get the win; surviving a four-run third inning. He had a career-high 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter. 

The Panthers opened the scoring in the second inning. Churchich was hit by a pitch with one out and Chatham beat out an infield hit. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Pearce cleared the bases with a double to right center for a 2-0 lead.

LC opened up a 6-0 lead with a four-run third inning. With one out, Joe Ruth doubled and Laryisson walked. Churchich drove the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to make it 5-0. Chatham reached second when his fly ball was dropped and Pearce followed with a single up the middle to drive in the fourth run of the inning.

Covenant used the long ball to get back in the game in its half of the fourth inning. Alex Gonzalez homered with one out for the Scots' first run. Three batters later, Brooks DuBose hit a three-run home run to make it 6-4.

The Panthers answered with two home runs of their own. Chatham led off the fifth with with his home run to make it 7-4. In the sixth, base hits by Rhett Mixon and Ruth put runners on the corners. Mixon came home on a wild pitch for the inning's first run. Layrisson made it 10-4 with his second home run of the season over the right field fence. 

The Scots loaded the bases with on outs in the seventh off reliever Cal Fuller. Tanner Chafin came on and got out of the inning with just one run scored. Rhett Hebert made a good stop at second for the first out as a run scored. Chafin helped himself with a nice play to get the lead runner coming home for the second out and got a pop out to end the inning. 

Chafin retired the Scots in order in the eighth and Spencer Douches closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Panthers return to Covenant on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. with a 9-inning game and a 7-inning game after the first game.
