Box Score LaGrange worked extra for the second straight week, turning back Berry 28-27 in double overtime Saturday night at Callaway Stadium. The Panthers are off to their first 2-0 start in the program's history.
Senior quarterback Graham Craig threw for four touchdowns for the second straight week. He finished the game 38 for 51 for 374 yards and two interceptions.
Craig completed at least one pass to 11 different receivers in the game. Ervens Oge led the team with eight catches for 70 yards. Michael Gray had a team-high 86 receiving yards on six catches.
The Panthers did not take their first lead of the game until the second overtime. The Vikings (0-2) led 7-0 after a quarter and 14-7 at halftime.
The Panthers drew even in the third quarter. Marsalis Jackson turned a short completion from Craig into a 36-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Will Jeffcoat's extra point tied the game at 14 after three quarters.
The Vikings drove to the Panthers' 29 in the fourth quarter before stalling. Quarterback Dale Jackson, who also threw for four touchdowns, misfired on three straight attempts. Jordan Daniels broke up Jackson's fourth down pass to Trey Ciresi.
The Panthers, after a pair of punts sandwiched around an interception, got the ball back with 1:21 left in regulation. They got as far as the Vikings' 32 and Jeffcoat's 49-yard field goal attempt at the end of regulation was blocked.
Berry got the ball first in the overtime period and scored to go up 21-14. The Panthers answered with Craig's second touchdown pass to Jackson from 11 yards out to send the game to a second overtime.
The Panthers opened the second overtime with the ball. They drove down to the Vikings' 4-yard line where they faced fourth-and-2. After a timeout, Craig found Oge open in the end zone for the touchdown and a 28-21 lead.
But the Vikings responded with a short touchdown pass from Jackson to draw within one, 28-27. On the extra point, the Vikings faked the point after and went for the win, but Methus Weldon's pass was overthrown, giving the Panthers the hard-fought win.
In the first half, the Panthers had a seven play 69-yard drive to tie the game 7-7. Craig's 24-yard touchdown strike to Gray capped the drive.
The Panthers open up the USA South conference schedule next Saturday at Greensboro.
