Baseball: Reed has big day in Panthers' USA South doubleheader with Covenant

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Junior Jim Reed had a big day for LaGrange in its USA South doubleheader with Covenant on Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium.

The visiting Scots (16-6, 12-3 USA South) took both games from the Panthers (8-17, 5-10 USA South), winning the first game 7-6 and completing the sweep with a 9-3 second game victory.

Reed went 5-for-9 at the plate in the two games. He scored a run and drove in three more, raising his batting average 30 points to .250.

In the first game, the lead changed hands four times. The Panthers struck first with two runs in the fourth inning.

Cain Sauls led off with a single and one out later, Chris Laye walked. Both runners moved up into scoring on a wild pitch. Kyle Nerbonne came through with a two-out single to drive in both runners for a 2-0 lead.

The Scots took advantage of two Panther errors in the sixth inning to score three unearned runs to go up 3-2.

The Panthers retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Reed drove in tying run with an RBI single. Blake Schuck scored on a wild pitch and Reed later scored as Alex Murfin reached safely on an error to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead.

The two teams swapped runs in the eighth. Alec Redden doubled to left center with one out in the Panthers' half of the inning. Chris Laye followed with a double to right, scoring pinch-runner Alex Hvizdzak, giving the Panthers a 6-4 lead heading to the ninth.

The Scots loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth on a base hit and two errors. David Lockwood cleared the bases with a double to the gap in left off Schuck (0-1), for a 7-6 lead.

The Panthers went in order in the bottom of the inning against reliever Chris Rollins.

The Panthers took an early lead in the second game. In the second inning with two out and none on, Chad Pigg reached on an error to keep the inning going.

Schuck and Keith Sims followed with back-to-back singles, with Pigg scoring on Sims' hit. Reed brought home Schuck and Sims with a long double to right center for a 3-0 lead.

Covenant came back with two runs in the third and four more in the fifth off Justin Yestrumsky (2-5) to take the lead for good.

The Scots closed out the scoring with a run off Tyler Brooks in the seventh and two more off Josh Bricker in the ninth.

Reed finished with three hits, including the double, in the second game. The Panthers had 17 hits in the two games.

The Panthers play a three-game USA South series at Piedmont beginning next Friday.
