Box Score DANVILLE, Va. - LaGrange came from behind to down Averett 6-4 on Sunday. The Panthers improved to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in the USA South, by taking two of three from the Cougars (7-11, 2-7).
Jarred Adams evened his record at 2-2 by going five innings. He allowed four runs but only two were earned. Adams scattered five hits, walked two and struck out one.
For the second day in a row, the bullpen shut down Averett. Daniel Garrett threw three scoreless innings, while Blake Schuck closed out the win in the ninth for his second save in as many days.
The Panthers banged out 10 hits in the win. Casey Bell, Jake Hipple and Alex Murfin all had two hits. Murfin scored three runs while Bell drove in two runs.
The Panthers got a run in the first for an early 1-0 lead. They loaded the bases with no outs. Bell's sacrifice fly to center scored Jim Reed, who had led off the inning with a walk.
Averett came with a run in their half of the first and another in the second to go up 2-1. The Panthers tied the game in the third.
Murfin led off the inning with a single, moved up to second as Reed reached on an error and over to third on a fly ball out by Hipple. Cain Sauls got the two-out hit to bring home Murfin, tying the game 2-2.
The Cougars retook the lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third.
In the fifth, Murfin again led off with a single. The Panthers loaded the bases as Reed was hit by a pitch and Hipple reached on an error.
Bell's second sacrifice fly of the game scored Murfin to make it 4-3. Chris Laye doubled down the left field line to drive in Reed and Hipple with the tying and go-ahead runs.
The Panthers got another two-out hit in the sixth to add an insurance run. Murfin scored his third run of the game as Hipple drove a single through the right side.
Garrett relieved Adams in the sixth after the Cougars opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Garrett got the next two batters but an error loaded the bases. But the threat ended as Garrett got Hunter Ashworth to fly out to end the inning.
Garrett retired six of the next seven batters before Schuck came on to pitch the ninth. Schuck gave up a base hit to Ashworth before closing the game on a pop up to first by Cody Moore.
The Panthers play a three-game USA South series at Maryville beginning Friday, March 21.
