Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Va. - LaGrange and Averett split a USA South doubleheader Saturday. The Panthers (4-13, 2-6 USA South) took the first game 3-2, with the Cougars (7-10, 2-6) getting the split with a 7-0 win in the second game.
The Panthers got 4-2/3 combined innings of scoreless relief from Daniel Garrett and Blake Schuck in Game 1. Garrett (1-0) went 2-1/3 innings to get his first win of the season. Schuck pitched the final two innings to get the save in his first pitching appearance of the season.
Zack Tatham started and went 4-2/3 innings before giving way to Garrett. Tatham allowed the two runs, five hits, walked two, and struck out five.
Casey Bell and Chris Laye backed the pitching with two hits each. Laye had a triple included in his two hits.
The Panthers got two runs in the first off Cody Johnson (0-6), who went the distance for the Cougars.
Jim Reed led off the game with a walk and stole second. He scored easily as Cain Sauls tripled down the right field line. Sauls came home on a sacrifice bunt by Bell for a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars got both of their runs in the third inning to tie the game 2-2. The Panthers answered with the go-ahead run in the fourth.
Laye tripled to center field with two out. Alec Redden followed with a single through the left side to drive in Laye for a 3-2 lead.
Garrett came on in the fifth for Tatham with runners on the corners and two outs. The inning ended with the lead runner thrown out at home on an attempted double steal.
Schuck relieved Garrett to start the eighth. He retired the Cougars in order both innings to seal the win.
In the second game, the Cougars did all of their scoring by the third inning in taking a 7-0 lead. Justin Yestrumsky (1-4) took the loss.
Chris Dunn, Bruno Aurnhammer and Josh Bricker combined for five innings of scoreless relief.
The Panthers had seven hits in the game, with Laye and Chad Pigg getting two each.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series Sunday.
