Baseball: Panthers turn back Oglethorpe for third straight win

Box Score

LaGrange turned back Oglethorpe 8-4 on Tuesday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers' third straight win lifted them to 16-15, while the Stormy Petrels fell to 8-20.

Senior third baseman Josh Shiver continued his hot hitting. Shiver had three hits in a game for the fourth straight game. In his last 12 games, Shiver is batting .404 and has raised his batting average 62 points to .322.

Shiver got the Panthers going in the first inning. He led off the inning with a double to the left field fence. He moved to third on a ground out and scored as Brent Kinsey, who had three RBIs in the game, also ground out to make it 1-0.

Oglethorpe came back with a two runs in the third inning off starter Kenneth Strack to go up 2-1. The Panthers answered with three runs in the fourth to take the lead back.

Jon Brock singled through the left side with one out. He moved up to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. Cody Muren's fly out to right center brought in Brock to tie the game.

James Hall reached on an error to keep the inning going, then stole second and third base. The Panthers strung together three straight hits by Keith Sims, Kyle Nerbonne and Blake Schuck to drive in two more runs to make it 4-2.

The Stormy Petrels took advantage of a two out error in the seventh to score two runs to tie the game at 4-4. But the Panthers came back with three runs in their half of the seventh.

Shiver led off the inning with a single up the middle. After stealing second, he stole third also before scoring on Kinsey's line drive out to center to put the Panthers up 5-4. Brock and Cody Muren drew two-out walks before Miles Lee cleared the bases with a double to left to give the Panthers a 7-4 lead.

The Panthers added an insurance run in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Anthony Iannetta was hit by a pitch to start the inning. With one out, Shiver collected his third hit of the game. Kinsey followed with a double down the left field line to score Iannetta for the 8-4 final.

Tyler Brooks (2-2), the fourth of five Panther pitchers in the game, got the win with 1-1/3 innings of relief. He allowed a hit, walked two and struck out three.

The Panthers play Piedmont on Friday at 1 p.m. in the USA South Tournament.
