Baseball: Panthers go extra innings with Huntingdon

Box Score

Huntingdon broke through in the 10th inning to down LaGrange 6-5 on Friday night in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field. The game was the first of three games scheduled for the weekend between the Hawks and the Panthers.

The loss evened the Panthers' record to 22-22, while Huntingdon improved to 29-9. The Panthers will have Senior Day for Saturday's game. The team's 14 seniors will be honored in a ceremony beginning at 12:45 p.m. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Panther starter Kenny Strack. Strack went six innings in the game, giving up four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five.

The Panthers came back with two runs in their half of the second inning. Miles Lee walked with one out and came all the way around to score on James Hall's double to the left center gap. After moving up as Blake Schuck reached on an error, Hall came home on Josh Shiver's base hit through the left side.

Huntingdon built a 4-2 lead with two runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth. Keegan Lambeth had an RBI double in the fourth and Trey Smith drove in the run in the sixth with a triple down the right field line.

The Panthers came up with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score. Cody Muren kept the inning going with a walk, ending a streak of 12 straight batters retired by starter Cory Belyeu.

Muren stole second and Kyle Nerbonne singled to deep short to put two runners on. Lee followed with a triple to right field to drive in Muren and pinch-runner Alex Hvizdzak to tie the game 4-4.

Drew Williamson (1-6) came on for Strack to start the seventh inning. He worked himself in and out of a jam in the eighth inning. The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks sandwiched around a single. Williamson got Evan Agnew to ground out to first to end the threat.

The Hawks broke through in the 10th off Williamson. Joseph Odom tripled to the center field fence and Lambeth followed with a single through the drawn in infield for the go-ahead run. Jordan Freeman added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 6-4.

In the bottom of the inning, Hawk closer Neil Lawler retired the first two batters he faced. But Jon Brock kept the Panthers alive with a double down the left field line. Brock came around to score when Muren's grounder to short was misplayed to make it a one run game. Lawler ended the game by getting Linwood Roberds to ground out for the 6-5 final.

The Panthers had nine hits in the game. Shiver was 3-for-5 with the RBI. Brock had two hits, including the double.
