Box Score Covenant rallied in the ninth inning to edge LaGrange 4-3 in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field on Friday. The Panthers slipped to 20-18, while the Scots improved to 24-11.
Drew Williamson started for the Panthers and went five innings. He gave up two runs on four hits, walked six and struck out five.
Derek O'Kelley pitched into the ninth, allowing a run on two hits. Tyler Brooks (3-3) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits.
The Panthers did all of their scoring in the first inning off Micah Mabe (7-1). With one out, Anthony Iannetta singled and then stole second. He moved over to third on a base hit by Brent Kinsey.
Iannetta scored and Kinsey moved up to second when Mabe was called for a balk. Two batters later, Cody Muren drove in Kinsey with a hit to right field. Brandon Espinosa drove in Jon Brock with a two-hit single to make it 3-0.
Mabe settled down after the first inning. He allowed four more hits, while striking out 13 in going the distance.
The Scots got two runs off Williamson in the fifth to cut the Panthers' lead to one. In the ninth, they got a sacrifice fly from Sterling Witt to tie the game. Perry Rigby drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single off Brooks.
The Panthers finished with nine hits. Brock, Iannetta and Muren each had two hits.
The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
