Baseball: Shiver's game-winning hit carries Panthers past Greensboro

Box Score

Josh Shiver's base hit in the bottom of the ninth lifted LaGrange to a 3-2 win over Greensboro on a cold Saturday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field.

The win evened the three-game USA South series for the Panthers (5-8, 5-6 USA South) against The Pride (8-7, 4-7 USA South). The two teams close out the series Sunday at 2 p.m.

For the second straight game, the Panthers got outstanding starting pitching. Robby Williams gave up two runs, only one earned, in eight innings of work. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out five.

Gage Mooney relieved Williams in the ninth inning, walking two and getting two outs. Kenneth Strack (2-2) came in for Mooney and got the final out of the inning, stranding runners at first and third.

Keith Sims led off the ninth for the Panthers with a base hit to the right side. He stole second and moved over to third when Brandon Key bunted his way on base.

Brent Kinsey was intentionally walked to load the bases. With the infield playing in, Shiver slapped a ball through the left side to score Sims with the winning run. It was the second walk-off win of the season for the Panthers.

Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Panthers came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Shiver was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He stole second with one out and moved over to third on Grey Bittinger's base hit. Shiver scored the tying run as James Hall flew out in foul territory on the left field side.

Brandon Espinosa kept the inning going with a swinging bunt single. Linwood Roberds followed with a flare to center to score Bittinger to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

The Pride tied the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by James Feldman. The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the inning but left the bases loaded.

The Panthers had eight hits in the game from eight different batters. Jon Brock's double in the third inning was the Panthers' only extra base hit.
