Senior pitcher Doug Scherer led LaGrange to a 3-2 USA South win over fifth-ranked Christopher Newport in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field on Sunday. The victory enabled the Panthers (9-9, 8-7 USA South) to take two of the three weekend games from the conference-leading Captains (16-4-1, 12-3 USA South).

Scherer threw his first and also the team's first complete game of the season. He gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out nine in upping his season record to 4-1.

The Captains did all of their scoring in the first inning. They bunched four hits in the inning to take a 2-0 lead. Over the next seven innings, Scherer allowed the Captains only two hits.

The Panthers also did all of their scoring in one inning. Without getting the ball out of the infield and on one hit, the Panthers pushed across three runs in the third off CNU starter Bryan Bierlein (4-1).

Bierlein walked James Hall and Brandon Espinosa to start the inning. Blake Schuck put down a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error on the play allowed Schuck to reach with Hall coming around to score the Panthers' first run.

Schuck stole second, the first of five stolen bases in the game for the Panthers, to put runners on second and third. Jon Brock reached on a chopper over the mound as Espinosa came home to tie the game. Keith Sims reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Schuck to score the go-ahead run.

Scherer made the lead stand up. After the first inning, he faced one batter over the minimum in the next five innings. The Captains got two ninth inning hits, but Scherer struck out Paul Keyes looking to end the game.

The Panthers are scheduled to host Berry on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
