Box Score 2 ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Doug Scherer pitched LaGrange past North Carolina Wesleyan in the first game as the Panthers split a USA South doubleheader with the Bishops on Sunday.
Scherer (2-1) pitched seven scoreless innings as the Panthers (3-7, 3-5 USA South) took the first game 3-0. He scattered six hits, struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked only two. Tyler Brooks closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief pitching for his second save of the year.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the third inning. Brandon Espinosa led off the inning with his first double of the season. He moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jon Brock and scored easily when James Hall doubled to left field to make it 1-0.
The Panthers padded their lead with a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh. Josh Shivers' RBI double to left center scored Brent Kinsey, who had led off the inning with an infield single. Brock led off the seventh with his first triple of the season and scored when Cody Muren flied out to center.
Scherer worked his way out of a major jam in the bottom of the sixth. The Bishops loaded the bases with two outs, but Scherer struck out Jake Alexander looking to end the threat.
The Panthers finished with nine hits. Brock and Shiver each had two hits.
The Bishops (5-6, 5-3 USA South) came back to take the second game 7-0. The Panthers had 10 hits in the game, led by Brent Kinsey's three hits that included a double.
Robby Williams (1-1) started and pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs. Derek O'Kelley and Henry Jacobs finished the game on the mound for the Panthers.
The two teams close out their three game series Monday at 1 p.m. The Panthers are scheduled to host Berry on Tuesday at Williamson Stadium in Cleaveland Field beginning at 5 p.m.
