Football: Fourth quarter comeback falls short at Methodist

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Graham Craig had another record-setting game as LaGrange's fourth quarter comeback fell short against Methodist on Saturday. The Monarchs  (5-2, 3-1 USA South) held on for a 43-41 win over the Panthers (3-4, 3-2 USA South).

Craig continued to rewrite the Panther passing records. He threw four touchdown passes in the game and now has 28 for the season, breaking Drew Carter's record of 26 during the 2008 season. Craig broke the USA South single-season touchdown passes record last week against Huntingdon.

The junior threw for 393 yards in the game. He set school and conference game records of 42 completions and 67 attempts. Craig has 2,756 yards passing this season and needs 70 more yards to set a new conference single-season record.

Marsalis Jackson had his second straight 100-yard receiving game, finishing with eight catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin Roelle tied the single-game reception mark for the second time this season with 10 for 73 yards.

The Panthers had a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Craig had throw a short 2-yard touchdown to Jackson in the first quarter and another of 15-yards to Erven Oge with 9:41 left in the half.

Methodist scored the next 23 points to build a 30-14 lead midway through the third quarter. Quarterback Max Reber threw for two of the scores and ran for another. Reber had 452 yards passing and five touchdowns in the game.

The Panthers closed the gap late in the third quarter. Craig and Jackson hooked up on a 56-yard strike to make it 30-21.

The Panther defense forced the Monarchs into a three and out to get the ball back. Marquius Young scored from 6 yards out on a fourth and goal on the third play of the fourth quarter to make it 30-28.

Reber answered for Methodist with touchdown passes of 42 and 76 yards to push the Monarchs' lead to 43-28 with 9:14 left.

The defense came up with a touchdown with five minutes left. Reber fumbled the ball and Andre Carter scooped up the loose ball and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown to get the Panthers back in the game. It was the Panthers' longest returned fumble.

The Panthers got the ball back at their own 20 with four minutes left. Craig moved the Panthers down the field in 10 plays, finishing the drive with a 19-yard scoring play to Young to make it 43-41. Craig's pass on the ensuing 2-point try to tie the game fell incomplete.

Methodist recovered the onside kick and was able to run out the clock to hold on to the win.

Jordan Chambers had 15 tackles and forced a fumble to lead the defense. Carter finished with nine tackles. Jordan Daniels had an interception and five tackles.

The Panthers host Christopher Newport for Senior Night next Saturday at 6 p.m.
