Box Score Birmingham-Southern held off LaGrange 12-7 in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field on Tuesday. The Panthers fell to 13-19 on the season with the non-conference loss.
Birmingham-Southern, ranked 17th nationally in Division III, improved to 25-6 with its seventh straight win and 20th in the last 21 games. The visiting Panthers (25-6) avenged an earlier 7-6 loss to the Panthers back on Feb. 28.
The visiting Panthers banged out 18 hits against four Panther pitchers. Robby Williams started and allowed four runs in four innings. Kenneth Strack (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs in three innings.
The Panthers had 13 hits in the game. Evin Eichelberger was 3-for-4, including a double with three runs scored. Josh Shiver also had three hits that included a double and scored twice. Cody Muren had two doubles and a RBI.
The Panthers built a 4-1 lead through three innings. Brent Kinsey had an RBI single in the first and drove in another run with a groundout in the third. Shiver led off the second with a double and scored as Miles Lee grounded out.
Birmingham-Southern came back with three runs off Williams in the fourth to tie the game, then scored three more in the fifth off Strack to take a 7-4 lead. All six runs scored with two outs in the inning.
Trailing 8-4, the Panthers left the bases loaded in the seventh inning. They rallied to get within a run in the eighth with three runs.
Shiver led off the eighth with a single and Anthony Iannetta walked. Shiver came around to score on an errant pick off attempt as Iannetta ended up at third. Iannetta scored as Lee grounded out to cut the deficit to 8-6. After a single by Eichelberger, Muren doubled to left to make it a one run game, 8-7.
The visiting Panthers, aided by two errors, scored four unearned runs in the top of the ninth off Mason Webster to go up 12-7. The Panthers got a couple of hits in the bottom of the ninth but could not push across a run.
The Panthers open a three-game GSAC series at Huntingdon on Friday. The two teams are tied for first in the GSAC with 4-2 records.
