Box Score 2 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange split a GSAC doubleheader with Covenant on Saturday. The Panthers won the first game 10-3, while the Scots came back to take the second game 9-5 to take two of the three in the weekend GSAC series.
The first game win was highlighted by Brent Kinsey hitting the first home run of the season for the Panthers (12-18, 4-2 GSAC). Kinsey's solo shot came in the third inning. Kinsey had four hits, scored five runs and drove in three runs in the doubleheader.
David Miller went 6-for-8 in the two games. Miller went 4-for-5 in the first game with a double, scored a run and drove in two more runs.
Doug Scherer (4-3) got the win in the first game. Scherer went eight innings, allowing the three runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out two.
The Panther gave Scherer all the runs he needed with five in the second inning. Cody Muren bunted his way on with the third straight hit for the Panthers. An error on the play allowed Jon Brock to score with the inning's first run.
Miles Lee followed with a two-run triple to right center to make it 3-0. Lee scored on Anthony Iannetta's bunt single for the fourth run. Iannetta later scored as Evin Eichelberger flied out to center field to drive in the fifth run.
The Panthers increased their lead to 6-0 in the third inning. Kinsey led off the inning with his home run to left field.
The Panthers added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning to pad their lead to 9-1. Miller's double drove in the run in the fourth and he had an infield single in the sixth for another RBI.
The Panthers closed out the scoring in the seventh inning. Kyle Nerbonne doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch for the 10-3 final.
Covenant came back to gain the split in the second game. The Scots helped themselves by turning four double plays in the game.
Trailing 4-0 after two innings, the Panthers got back in the game with a run in the third and another in the fourth. Lee led off the third with a single and later scored on Eichelberger's sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Kinsey led off with a double and scored on a fly out by Cody Muren.
The Scots came back with a run in the fifth inning to go up 5-2. The Panthers cut the deficit with a run in the sixth. Brock doubled with one out and Miller followed with a single to left. An error on the play allowed Brock to score to make it 5-3.
Covenant added four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open. The Panthers got two runs in the eighth for the 9-5 final. Kinsey had an RBI double in the inning and later scored as Miller grounded out.
Robbie Williams (2-3) took the loss for the Panthers. Williams pitched seven innings, allowing the nine runs, six of those were earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.
The Panthers play the College of Wooster on Monday at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Gary's Field in Xenia, Ohio.
