Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LaGrange took advantage of Birmingham-Southern mistakes for a 7-6 win Tuesday night at Striplin Field. The Panthers are now 4-8.
Birmingham-Southern (5-4) committed four errors in the game. The miscues led to five unearned runs for the Panthers.
Mason Webster (1-1) got the win after surviving a two-run ninth inning rally by the host Panthers. Webster relieved starter Robby Williams in the fifth inning, pitching the final 4-1/3 innings. He allowed four runs, two earned, while walking three and striking out seven.
Williams gave up two runs in his 4-2/3 innings of work. He surrendered five hits, walked five and struck out two.
The Panthers were out hit in the game 10-7. Doug Scherer had three hits and was the only Panther with more than one hit.
The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. They loaded the bases with one out and scored as Linwood Roberds walked, forcing in Scherer, who led off the inning with a single.
The Panthers scored two more runs on the first Birmingham-Southern error of the game. Jon Brock reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed Roberds and Evin Eichelberger to score.
Birmingham-Southern came back with two runs in its half of the fourth to make it 3-2. The Panthers answered with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to up their lead to 5-2.
The Panthers increased their lead to 7-2 in the seventh. Brandon Espinosa led off with a hit. Brock put down a sacrifice bunt, but an error on the play allowed Espinosa to come all the way around to score with Brock ending up a third. Josh Shiver brought in Brock with a sacrifice fly for the final Panther run of the game.
Birmingham-Southern got two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-4. The host Panthers left the bases loaded as Webster got a strike out to end the inning.
In the ninth, the host Panthers cut the deficit to 7-6 with two runs and had runners on first and second with one out. Webster closed out the game by getting a pop out to second and a strike out for the final out.
The Panthers host Albion (Mich.) in a three-game series beginning Saturday at 7 p.m.
