Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - Millsaps pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 24-7 win over LaGrange at Harper Davis Field on Saturday. The loss dropped the Panthers to 0-2 for the season, while the Majors evened their record at 1-1.
LaGrange rushed the ball for 168 yards in the game, while holding the Majors to 66 yards on the ground. But the Panthers passed for only 38 yards in the game, the fewest in the program's short history.
Quarterbacks Michael May and Ed Russ combined for 6-of-15 passing in the game with two interceptions. Russ led the Panthers in rushing with 62 yards on 10 carries.
Garrett Pinciotti and Konner Joplin combined to throw for 209 yards and a touchdown for the Majors. Joplin played the second half after Pinciotti was hurt at the end of the first half.
Craig Ryan led the Panthers' defense with eight tackles. Anthony Cochran had six tackles and recovered a fumble. Kyle Sanders had two quarterback sacks.
Millsaps took a 7-0 lead just 18 seconds into the game. Mike Barthelemy returned Will Jeffcoat's opening kickoff 92 yards to the Panthers' two-yard line. Barthelemy scored on the next play to give the Majors a quick lead.
The Panthers tied the game in the second quarter, driving 85 yards in 15 plays. Russ had 45 yards rushing on the drive. He had a 26-yard run to the Millsaps 21 for a first down. Kent Gibson had a 32-yard run for the fourth play of the drive to get the Panthers in good field position.
Facing third and 10, the Panthers picked up the first down on a pass interference call against the Majors, putting the ball at the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Aaron Duncan scored from the two and Drake Nahrwold's extra point tied the game at 7-7 with 5:59 left in the half.
Millsaps intercepted May at the Panthers 30 late in the half. The Majors drove to the 11 before settling for a Beau Brady field goal for a 10-7 lead at halftime.
The Panthers did not cross midfield in the second half. After a scorless third quarter, the Majors scored two touchdowns in a two-minute period to break the game open.
Joplin threw 43 yards to Barthelemy for the first score to cap a quick three-play 55-yard drive. A special teams breakdown by the Panthers gave the Majors the ball on the Panthers one yard line. Thomas Theriot scored from there for the 24-7 final margin.
