Box Score LaGrange used a five-run sixth inning and held on for a 7-5 Senior Day win over Covenant on Saturday at Cleaveland Field. The win enabled the Panthers (20-19) to take two out of three games from the Scots (22-13).
Before the game, seniors Matt Hvizdzak, J.J. Martone, Craig Mobley, Luis Perez, Robbie Shelton and Trevor Tullock were recognized. The seniors have been a part of 95 wins in their careers, an NCAA tournament appearance, a GSAC regular season and tournament championship and a GSAC tournament runner-up finish.
The Panthers handed Covenant's Tyler Smith his first loss of the season. Smith entered the game 9-0 with a 1.61 earned run average. Smith allowed eight hits and six runs; four earned, in 5-2/3 innings.
Robby Williams (6-4) started and got the win for the Panthers. In six innings, Williams allowed eight hits, four runs; two earned, while walking five and striking out four.
Martone gave up two hits and a walk in pitching two scoreless innings. Mason Webster survived a rocky ninth inning to get his fourth save of the season.
The Panthers finished with nine hits in the game. Hvizdzvak had two hits, including a two-run double to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs. Phil Woods also had two hits, including a double.
Covenant jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the first with the help of two Scot errors.
Jon Brock reached on an error to lead off the inning for the Panthers. One out later, Shelton reached on the second error to put runners on second and third. David Miller doubled down the left field line to tie the game. Miller is 13-for-20 in his last five games with seven RBIs.
The Scots the Panthers' only error of the game to push across two unearned runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. It remained that score until the sixth.
The Panthers scored five runs in the sixth inning, all with two outs, to take a 7-4 lead. Bobby Woodall's pinch hit single scored Shelton with the first run of the inning.
A base hit to right by Perez and a bobble in the outfield on the play put runners on second and third. Hvizdzvak chased Smith from the game with a two-run double to the gap in left center for a 5-4 lead.
Shane Ludwick relieved Smith and issued three straight walks, the last to Brent Kinsey that scored Hvizdzak. Brian Simons relieved Ludwick and threw a wild pitch to score Woods to up the Panthers' lead to 7-4 before getting the final out of the inning.
Webster relieved Martone to start the ninth inning. The Scots loaded the bases with no outs. Webster struck out pinch-hitter Caleb Abney for the first out. Kevin McCrary made a diving catch off the bat of Chris Rollins for the second out as David Lockwood scored on the play to make it 7-5. Webster closed out the game by striking out Harrison Fisher.
The Panthers close out the regular season Tuesday at home against Emory.
