Baseball: Panthers down Covenant 5-3 to even series

Box Score

LaGrange built an early lead and held on for a 5-3 win over Covenant on Friday at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers evened their record at 19-19 and the three-game series at one game apiece with the Scots (22-12).

Senior Trevor Tullock (5-3) went the distance for the Panthers, who have won three of their last four games. Tullock scattered nine hits, walked four and struck out three.

Andre Glover took the loss for Covenant. Glover went eight innings, allowing all five runs, but only two were earned. He walked two and struck out two, while giving up eight hits.

The first three batters in the Panthers' lineup had six of the eight hits. Jon Brock, Brent Kinsey and David Miller each had two hits. Kinsey had a double for the Panthers' only extra base hit and Miller had two RBIs.

The Panthers staked Tullock to a 5-0 lead through three innings. In the first inning, Miller drove in Brock, who had a lead off single, with an RBI single to put the Panthers up 1-0.

The Panthers added to their lead with two runs in each of the second and third innings. In the second, Matt Hvizdzak drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Phil Woods added an RBI single. Miller had his second RBI single of the game in the third, while Kinsey scored on a double play to make it 5-0.

The Scots cut the Panthers lead with a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to make it 5-3. In the fifth, Luke Furato had a two-run bases loaded double.

On Furato's hit, catcher Luis Perez took Kinsey's relay throw from the outfield and tagged out James Rollins trying to score on the play. Tullock escaped further damage by getting David Lockwood to fly out to end the inning.

Glover settled down after the third inning. He held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the way. Kinsey led off the eighth inning with a double off the left field fence but was stranded at third.

Tullock pitched around Sterling Witt's triple in the sixth inning. He gave up a walk to put runners on the corners but got the next two outs to get out of the inning.

In the ninth inning, Tullock got the first two outs before Taylor Oldham reached on an infield single. Rollins hit into to a force play to end the game.

The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Panthers.
