Box Score Covenant broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the eighth inning and went on to a 6-2 win over LaGrange on Thursday night at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers' record dipped to 18-19, while the Scots improved to 22-11.
David Lockwood's two-run double off Doug Scherer (1-5) in the eighth drove in the go-ahead runs. The Scots added an unearned run later in the inning and an insurance run in the ninth inning.
Scherer pitched seven complete innings and faced three batters in the eighth. He scattered 10 hits and only three of the five runs he gave up were earned.
Shane Ludwick (1-1) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to get the win. Demarius Johnson closed out the game with two scoreless innings to get his fourth save of the season.
Sterling Witt started for the Scots. He pitched six innings giving up two runs, of which only one was earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
The panthers had seven hits in the game. David Miller was a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles. Craig Mobley had a double in four at-bats.
The Panthers pushed across an unearned run in the fourth inning to go up 1-0. Miller doubled to the left field fence with one out. He moved over to third on a ground out and scored as Travis Ross reached on an error.
Covenant came back to take the lead in the fifth inning. Chris Rollins led off the inning with a single to left center. Two outs later, Taylor Oldham hit his 10th home run of the season to put the Scots up 2-1.
The Panthers tied the game in the sixth inning. Miller led off the inning with his third double of the game. Bobby Woodall followed with a base hit to left center to drive in Miller. Woodall was out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The three-game series resumes Friday at 1 p.m. The final game is Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Panthers will have Senior Day.
