Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ninth-ranked Birmingham-Southern used a five-run fifth inning to erase a two-run deficit and went on to an 8-4 win over LaGrange on Wednesday night at Striplin Field.
The Panthers (11-6) lost their second straight game and lost to the host Panthers for the second time this season. Birmingham-Southern won the first meeting 10-0 at Cleaveland Field on Feb. 15.
The Panthers had 11 hits in the game. Kevin McCrary went 3-for-5 including a triple in the game to raise his team-leading batting average to .370. He scored a run and had an RBI.
Brent Kinsey and Robbie Shelton each had two hits and a RBI each. Kinsey had his sixth double of the season, which leads the team.
Trevor Tullock (3-2) started and took the loss. Tullock allowed six runs in 4-1/3 innings. He gave up six hits, walked five and struck out five.
Doug Scherer relieved Tullock and allowed two runs in 2-2/3 innings. Mason Webster pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a hit and walking one.
Jordan Burchett started for the host Panthers, allowing a run in three innings. Michael McCalib (1-1) got the win, allowing two runs in three innings.
The teams traded runs in the first inning. Shelton's two-out RBI single to left center scored David Miller (1-for-5, 2R). Birmingham-Southern tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double by Sam Hill (3-for-3, R, 2 RBI).
The Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. McCrary's first triple of the season scored Phil Woods (0-for-2, R). McCrary scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
Birmingham-Southern answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Hill drove in the first run with his second double. Jon Walker (1-for-2, R, 2RBI) chased Tullock with a two-run double. John Lawroski capped the inning with a two-run single off Scherer.
The host Panthers added two runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-3. The Panthers got a run back in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Kinsey (2-for-4, RBI) to make it 8-4. The Panthers left the bases loaded in the inning.
The Panthers host Montclair State on Friday at 7 p.m.
