Box Score NAPLES, Fla.- LaGrange ended its 2011 season with a 43-7 rout of Ave Maria on Saturday. The Panthers finished the season 4-6, while the Gyrenes, in their first season, dropped to 0-8.
Junior running back Kent Gibson ran for a game and career high 154 yards on just 11 carries, averaging a school single-game record of 14 yards per carry. Gibson had touchdown runs of 7, 44 and 47.
The Panthers had a season-high 507 yards of total offense, 333 on the ground. The 43 points was a season high, while the defense allowed its fewest points in a game this season.
The Panthers led 6-0 after the first quarter. A blocked punt set up a quick 3-play 45-yard scoring drive. Gibson ripped off a 25-yard run and two plays later quarterback Ed Russ covered the last 22 yards on a run for the score.
The Panthers added two more scores in the second quarter. Gibson capped a 9-play 52-yard drive with his first touchdown of the game. Josh Clinton set up the next Panther score with an interception. Russ threw a 21-yard touchdown to Charlie Sashington to put the Panthers up 20-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, a short punt set the Panthers up at the Gyrenes' 23-yard line. Michael May passed 17 yards to Billings down to the 3. Two plays later, May scored from the 1 to make it 27-0.
The Panther special teams set up the next score with a blocked field goal. The Panthers took advantage in just three plays as Gibson scored from 44 yards out to up the lead to 34-0.
The Gyrenes avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter, blocking a punt by the Panthers to set up a short 10-yard scoring drive. Tim Morley threw a short 8-yard touchdown to Chris Fahey.
Gibson closed out his career game with a 47 yard run and Thaddeus Greenaway tackled the Gyrenes' Nick Falkiewicz in the end zone for the 43-7 final.
The Panthers limited the Gyrenes to 161 yards of total offense. Anthony Cochran led the defense with 11 tackles, including two for losses.
