Box Score LaGrange took unbeaten and 17th-ranked Trinity down to the wire before falling 14-10 before a Homecoming crowd Saturday at Callaway Stadium. The loss left the Panthers 2-5, while the Tigers improved to 7-0.
In addition to Homecoming, it was Senior Day for the Panthers' 16 seniors. The seniors were recognized in pregame ceremonies.
The Panthers played a near-flawless first half in taking a 10-0 lead. The Tigers came back with two second-half scoring drives and stopped the Panthers' last drive with an interception in the end zone.
The Panthers finished with 300 yards of total offense against a Trinity defense that allowed only 226 yards per game. The Panthers ran for 187 yards in the game; 102 over what the Tigers were giving up a game.
Kent Gibson ran for a game and career high 87 yards on 18 carries. Ed Russ added 54 yards on 11 carries. Russ was 10-of-14 passing in the game for 100 yard, one touchdown and an interception.
In the first half, the Panther defense held the Trinity offense to one first down. The Tigers five first half possessions ended in four punts and a turnover.
The Panthers scored on their first possession with a long time consuming drive to go up 7-0. The Panthers took over nine minutes off the clock in going 76 yards in 16 plays. They converted four third down plays on the drive.
Russ was a perfect 4-for-4 on the drive. The drive ended with a one-handed catch by senior Devin Billings at the goal line for a 6-yard touchdown as Drake Nahrwold added the extra point.
The Panthers increased their lead on their second possession with a drive beginning at the end of the first quarter and ending in the second quarter with a field goal by Nahrwold. Russ ripped off a gain of 23 yards down to the Trinity 32. The drive bogged down at the 16 and Nahrwold hit from 33-yards out for a 10-0 lead with 12:58 left in the half.
The Panthers could not convert a Tiger turnover into points. Anthony Cochran forced a fumble and recovered the ball at midfield, setting the Panthers up in good field position. The Panthers got the to the Tiger 26 after Billings picked up a first down on a fourth down play. The drive stalled after a holding penalty and Russ was sacked on third down to force a punt.
The Panthers took the 10-0 lead into halftime. The Panthers had 179 yards of offense, while holding the Tigers to 75 yards. The Panthers held the ball for over 22 minutes in the half.
Trinity got its offense untracked in the third quarter. The Tigers needed only three plays to go 73 yards to cut the Panthers' lead to 10-7. Desmond King finished the drive with a 27-yard run with 4:01 left in the third quarter.
The quarter ended with the Tigers on the Panthers' two-yard line after King picked up a first down on a short pass from Nyklos McKissic. The Panthers stopped King on first down, then McKissic was stood up from the one on two straight plays. McKissic dove over from the one on fourth down to put the Tigers up 14-10 with 13:43 left in the game.
The Panthers got the ball at their own 12 after a Tiger punt with 8:30 left in the game. Russ threw 13 yards to Ethan Slate on a third-and-six for a first down to the 39.
Gibson ran for 18 yards, then Russ hooked up with Jordan Magaw for 27 yards to the Tigers' 16-yard line. On third-and-nine from the 15, Russ had his pass intercepted in the end zone by Tyler Barret and the Tigers ran out the final two minutes to hold on to the win.
