Football: Rhodes outlasts Panthers 31-24

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rhodes College ended LaGrange College's two-game winning streak with a 31-24 win over the Panthers at Fargason Field on Saturday. The Lynx evened their record at 2-2, while the Panthers slipped to 2-3.

The Panthers overcame a 14-point first half deficit to take a 24-21 lead in the third quarter. Rhodes got the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter and added a late field goal before stopping the Panthers with an interception in the end zone in the final seconds.

Rhodes' Dane Wilson rushed for a game-high 131 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Ed Russ ran for 114 yards and a touchdown. The Panthers had 226 yards rushing in the game.

Rhodes had 404 yards of total offense in the game; while the Panthers had 309. Lynx quarterback Brett Stoots threw for 262 yards but was intercepted three times. Russ was 7-for-19 for 83 yards and an interception.

Anthony Cochran intercepted Stoots on Rhodes' opening possession of the game. Cochran returned the ball 41yard to the Lynx 4 yard line.

The Panthers cashed in the turnover to take a 7-0 lead. A holding call pushed the Panthers back to the 14 on the first play after the interception. Russ carried it in from 15 yards out on third for the touchdown less than four minutes into the game.

Rhodes got its offense rolling late in the first quarter and into the second quarter. Wilson tied the game with a 5-yard run less than two mintues into the second quarter.

The Lynx scored on their next two possessions to open up a 21-7 lead. Wilson scored from 41 yards out and after a Panther turnover; ran it from the 1.

The Panthers answered with a 10-play 60-yard scoring drive at the end of the half. Gibson set the Panthers up a the Rhodes' 6-yard line with a 36-yard run. On fourth and goal, Russ found Jordan Magaw in the end zone for a 9-yard score to make it 21-14 at the half.

The Panthers took the opening kickoff of the second and drove 58 yards in 16 plays to tie the game. The Panthers converted on fourth down three times during the drive. Russ and Magaw hooked up on a 16-yard completion down to the 19.

Aaron Duncan got a first down to the 8 on a fourth and one. Gibson finished the drive three plays later from the 1 to tie the game at 21-21.

Josh Clinton's interception set up a 21-yard field goal by Drake Nahrwold to put the Panthers up 24-21 with 1:40 left in the third quarter. The Panthers had first and goal at the 2 after a 50-yard run by Russ but had to settle for the field goal.

Rhodes answered with a quick 8-play 64-yard drive beginning at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter. Stoots' 36-yard pass to Jack Lartigue set up Chris Rose's 1-yard touchdown run and a 28-24 lead with 13:59 remaining.

The Panthers next two possesions ended on downs inside Rhodes territory. They reached the 20 before giving the ball on the first drive and after linebacker Andre Carter's interception return to the Lynx 32; were stopped after four plays gained five yards.

Lukas Stockhausen kicked a 26-yard field to put Rhodes up 31-24 with 44 seconds left. The field goal was set up when Russ fumbled after being sacked by Michael Olushoga with the Lynx recovering at the Panthers' 4-yard line.

The Panthers got the ball at their 46-yard line following the field goal. Russ moved the Panthers in three plays down to the Rhodes 10. Magaw hauled in a 23-yard completion for a first and goal. But on the next play, Russ was intercepted by Tom Zigtema in the end zone to end the Panthers' last chance.

Carter was credited with 17 tackles to lead the Panther defense. Rummel Victor and Kyle Sanders were credited with eight tackles each.
