Panthers rally to upset #16 Birmingham-Southern 9-6

BSC (14-2) had beaten the Panthers 12-6 at Cleaveland Field on Feb. 19. For the Panthers, it was their second win over a ranked opponent this season. The Panthers beat fifth-ranked Heidelberg 8-6 last Saturday at Cleaveland Field.

Freshman James Connell (2-0) got the win in relief. Connell allowed a run in 4-2/3 innings. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three. Neal Smith allowed five run in 4-1/3 innings.

BSC's starting pitcher Jordan Burchette dominated the Panthers for six innings. He carried a no-hitter and a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning.

In the seventh, the Panthers loaded the bases with one out. Derek Hooper broke up the no-hitter with an infield single. Amauri Smith later scored the Panthers' first run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Jason Aylesworth's pinch-hit single scored Hooper to make it 5-2 and load the bases for Robbie Shelton. Shelton cleared the bases with a double to tie the game at 5-5.

BSC retook the lead in its half of the seventh but the Panthers came right back in the top of the eighth. The Panthers took advantage of two BSC errors that led to four unearned runs.

With two outs, Aylesworth doubled to put runners on second and third. Eric Heath reached on an error as both runners scored to put the Panthers up 7-6. Shelton and Jordan Martinec added run-scoring singles to make it 9-6.

Connell finished the game by retiring the host Panthers in order in the eighth and ninth innings. He retired the last seven batters he faced. Connell is 2-0 with a save in his last five appearances.

The Panthers host Rust College in doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
