North Greenville pulls away in second half to beat Panthers 55-27

LaGRANGE, Ga. - North Greenville pulled away in the second half for a 55-27 win over LaGrange College at Callaway Stadium on Saturday. The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-5 this season.

The Panthers were playing their first home game since Sept. 11. They had played four straight games on the road before hosting the NCAA Division II Crusaders (5-3).

Quarterback Willy Korn threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead North Greenville. Korn finished the game 12-for-15 passing for 220 yards.

The Crusaders had 505 yards of total offense. It was a balanced attack with 261 yards on the ground and 244 in the air.

LaGrange's Drew Carter threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. Carter was 27-for-45 throwing the ball in the game.

The Panthers built a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter. They took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in 14 plays for their first touchdown.

Andrecus Lindley accounted for 41 yards of the drive, running six times on the drive. Carter finished the drive with a short 4-yard touchdown pass to R.J. Miles for a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers upped their lead on their third possession. The Panthers drove 64 yards in nine plays after a Crusaders' punt.

Kent Gibson went 18 yards on a catch and run to the Crusader 15 and penalty on the play moved the ball to the 8. Three plays later, Carter threw to a wide open Lindley to make it 13-0.

North Greenville came back to score on their next two possessions to go up 14-13 at halftime. Idris Anderson scored from the 2 for the first Crusader touchdown. Korn scored from the 10 with seven seconds left in the half to put the Crusaders up 14-13.

The Crusaders scored on their first three possessions of the second half to open up a 34-13 lead. The last touchdown came on a 77-yard pass from Korn to Luis Hornedo.

The two teams swapped touchdowns for the rest of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter. The Panthers got within two scores twice.

The Panthers went 84 yards in nine plays late in the third quarter. Gibson ran 33 yards to the Crusader 21. Carter then went 18 yards to Torre Pike to the 1. Gibson scored on the next play to make it 34-20.

In the fourth quarter, Carter hooked up with Gibson on a 38 pass play to the Crusader 16. Carter came right back with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Riley Hill to cut the Crusader lead to 41-27.

North Greenville scored on its final two possessions for the 55-27 final. The last two drives covered a total of 42 yards after the Panthers failed on an onside kick and gave the ball over on downs at their own 9.

The Panthers are off next week before hosting Apprentice for Homecoming on Oct. 30.
