Wesley's defense, which surrendered only its
second touchdown of the season, held the Panthers to 134 yards of
total offense. The Panthers had 86 yards on their only scoring
drive in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines had 494 yards of total offense. Quarterback Shane
McSweeney threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Brandon Wright
rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Wesley's defense had five interceptions off three different
Panther quarterbacks. Drew Carter played only the first half after
being shaken up. He was 4-for-13 for only 19 yards. Backup Brett
Mason was picked off three times. Freshman quarterback Michael May
was 9-for-14 for 94 yards with one interception and the lone
touchdown pass in the second half.
The Panthers had great field position on their first two
possessions. They had the ball at the Wesley 43 after a punt on
their first possession. But three plays netted only two yards and
the Panthers were forced to punt it away.
Wesley marched 71 yards in five quick plays to go up 7-0. Colt
Shope returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards and a penalty on the
return set the Panthers up at the Wolverine's 5-yard line.
Carter misfired on three straight passes to bring up fourth down
at the 4. Josh Stripling's field goal attempt from 21 yards went
left and the Wolverines took over from there. The Panthers would
not cross midfield again until the fourth quarter.
Wesley went up 14-0 late in the first quarter. Gene Knight turned a
short reception into a 54-yard touchdown catch and run from
McSweeney. With 15 seconds left in the half, McSweeney hit Ellis
Krout from eight yards out for a 21-0 lead.
The Wolverines blew the game open in the third quarter as the
Panthers' first three drives all ended in interceptions. Coleman
Peteet returned an interception 18 yards for a score that was
sandwiched between two more touchdown pass from McSweeney.
Trailing 49-0 in the fourth quarter, May led the Panthers on an
86-yard 13 play drive to avoid the shutout. May accounted for all
but 14 yards on the drive. He completed passes of 21 yards to Nick
Langley and 19 more to Riley Hill down to the Wolverines' 20.
May came back to Langley for 11 yards and first and goal at the
9. On fourth down from the 2, he connected with Devin Billings for
the touchdown with 7:57 left.
Wesley closed out the scoring with a six-play 79-yard drive.
Garrett Burgess capped the drive with a 13-yard run for the 56-7
final.
The Panthers are on the road next Saturday against NCAA Division
II Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo.
