GREENVILLE, Ill. – LaGrange's
2009 season ended with a 28-21 loss to Greenville at Francis Field
on Saturday. The Panthers finished the season 5-5 with their second
straight loss. Greenville finished the season 7-2.
The Panthers turned the ball over six times in the game. The
Panthers' last four possessions in the fourth quarter all ended in
interceptions. The host Panthers turned the first interception into
the game-winning touchdown.
The Panthers had come from behind for the third time to tie the
game at 21 early in the fourth quarter. Dustin Canon scored from
the 1 yard line to cap a 12-play 49 yard drive. Canon fumbled the
ball on the previous play but Jon Milner recovered for the Panthers
at the 1. The drive was also kept alive on Stephen Tuck's 9-yard
reception from Drew Carter on a fourth-and-8 play at the Greenville
14.
Carter was picked off by the Greenville defense three times on the
Panthers next three possessions. The last pick came on the last
play of the game.
Greenville took the opening kickoff and went 45 yards to take a 7-0
lead. The Panthers answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass from
Carter to Nick Langley.
The host Panthers retook the lead 13-7 in the second quarter and
led by that score at halftime. The Panthers took a 14-13 lead with
their first possession of the third quarter.
The Panthers went 66 plays in eight plays to take a 14-13 play.
Carter capped the drive with a 17-yard pass to Billings. But
Greenville came back to take a 21-14 lead by the end of the third
quarter.
Carter finished the game 17-for-34 with the four interceptions and
two touchdowns. The Panthers were held to 211 yards of total
offense.
Seniors Richard Okpani and Josh Britt had eight tackles each in
their final game for LaGrange. The game was the last for 25
LaGrange seniors, including 21 who had been with the program from
its beginning four years ago.
