Panthers celebrate Homecoming, Senior Day with win over Westminster

LaGrange's 25 seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony. The seniors represented the first four-year class for the program.

Westminster threw for 341 yards against LaGrange's nationally-ranked Division III pass defense. But the Panthers intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown. The defense forced a total of four turnovers in the game.

The defense came up with big plays in the Red Zone. The Blue Jays were stopped four times inside the 20 on a pair of turnovers and twice on downs. The Panthers also stopped another drive at their 25 on a fourth and short play.

Westminster finished the game with 378 total yards of offense. The receiving tandem of Carl Givens and Ty Kankolenski combined for 10 catches each and a total of 248 yards. Givens had 148 yards, while Kankolenski added 102.

The Panthers overcame 14 penalties for 126 yards to finish with 360 yards of offense. Junior quarterback Drew Carter threw for 256 yards and touchdowns to three different receivers. Senior Colt Shope had two catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter. Aided by a pass interference call on one fourth down play and converting on another, the Blue Jays drove 75 yards in 14 plays on the game's opening drive.

Quarterback Daniel Eidson, who threw for 252 yards before leaving the game in the second half, hit Givens on a fourth-and-15 for 19 yards to the Panthers' 7. Two plays later, Eidson went to Kankolenski from 5 yards out for the touchdown.

The Panthers' first drive ended as Carter was intercepted by Darian Garey at the Blue Jays' 9. But on the next play, Eidson threw right into the arms of Joe Frye, who went untouched for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game with 7:24 left in the first quarter.

The defense came up with its first big stop later in the quarter. Isaiah Mosley was stuffed by Richard Okpani for a yard loss on a fourth-and-1 at the Panthers' 25.

The Panthers covered the 74 yards in five quick plays. Carter connected with Shope on a 31-yard pass play to the Blue Jays' 41. Two plays later, Carter hit Nick Langley in stride for a 37-yard score to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Tim Hill intercepted Eidson early in the second quarter to set up the Panthers' third touchdown. Hill returned the interception 31 yards to the Blue Jays' 27.
Carter misfired on three straight passes to bring up fourth down. The Panthers went for the first down and Carter found Steven Tuck over the middle. Tuck broke an initial tackle, then weaved his way through the defense to complete the 27-yard catch and run touchdown. Josh Stripling's third extra point made it 21-7.

Westminster drove the ball to the Panthers' 28 later in the quarter. Kankolenski was stopped a yard short on third down by Okpani at the 19. On fourth-and-1, Eidson's pass was batted down by Kyle Armstrong to end the drive.

The Panthers drove the ball to the Westminster 15 before bogging down. Stripling booted a 32-yard field goal to put the Panthers up 24-7 at halftime.

Westminster's opening drive of the third quarter ended on a turnover. Mosley fumbled the ball on the handoff on a first down at the Panthers' 5. George Okpani recovered for the Panthers to deny the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays came right back on their next possession. A pair of penalties by the Panthers set up the Blue Jays at the Panthers' 2-yard line. Three running plays netted a yard. On fourth down, Eidson was sacked for a 12-yard loss by Josh Britt to kill the threat.

The Panthers needed only five plays to go up 31-7. Carter hit tight end Jake White for 20 yards to midfield. Two plays later, Carter went to Shope for 50 yards and the touchdown to complete the quick five-play drive.

The two teams swapped field goals later in the quarter. Stripling hit from 28 yards for his second field goal to make it 34-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Westminster scored in the final minute of the game on a 1-yard run by reserve quarterback Dan Franklyn for the 34-17 final. The Blue Jays were stopped earlier in the quarter when Kenny Pickens intercepted Franklyn's pass at the Panthers' 7 yard line.

The Panthers travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Huntingdon next Saturday.
