Box Score Birmingham-Southern took a hard fought 13-10 win over LaGrange on Thursday in Callaway Stadium. The loss dropped the Panthers to 0-2 on the young season. BSC improved to 2-1 with the win.
"I was really proud of the guys effort the whole game. Last year we were'nt in it from the beginning and we came out this year and showed how much we improved," said Coach Brandon Sewell. "We turned last year's 18-3 game into a three goal game, that was a lot closer until the end when we were pressing. I saw just how much we have improved in a year's time."
Tareyon Delgado led all scorers with six goals, tying his career high. LC got single goals from Michael Poteete, Kyro Holland, Selassie Richardson, and Issac Fuller. BSC got three goals each from Austin Johnson and Robert Marquet.
Delgado scored the game's first three goals to stake the Panthers to a quick 3-0 lead. BSC answered with five straight unanswered goals, three coming in the final two minutes of the opening period. Delgado scored at the outset of the second period to draw the Panthers within one, 5-4. But BSC scored the half's last four goals to build a 9-4 halftime lead.
Joshua Hargrove started in goal for LC in the second half. Hargrove allowed the Panthers to get back in the game with his work in the net. He held BSC to a single third period goal as the Panthers cut the deficit to two goals, 10-8. Kyro Holland opened the second half scoring with his first collegiate goal. Poteete and Delgado took advantage of man up opportunities to make it 9-7. Richardson's first collegiate goal made it a one goal game before BSC scored to take a 10-8 lead into the final period.
Isaac Fuller got his first goal of the season two minutes into the final period. After a BSC goal, Delgado closed out his scoring with another man up goal on Jack Bryan's third assist of the game to make it 11-10 with 1:46 left. BSC added a pair of insurance goals for the 13-10 final margin.
BSC had a 39-26 shot advantage in the game, but only 20-18 in the second half. Hargrove and Isaac Bohrer each had eight saves in goal for LC. Nathaniel Moore had nine ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Panthers.
The Panthers play at Berry on Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
