Men's Basketball: Panthers pick up crucial USA South win, 95-74, at Brevard

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – Junior Julian Cameron recorded his second-collegiate double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds and junior Lincoln Anderson scored a team-high 19 points for the LaGrange College men's basketball team in a 95-74 win at USA South-foe Brevard on Saturday.

Anderson shot 7-for-11 from the floor, while junior guard Ronald Youngblood had an impressive all-around game, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Drew Shepherd scored an efficient 15 points, going 6-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-4 on 3-pointers.

The Panthers (6-14, 5-8 USA South) have won back-to-back road games in the USA South and have won three of their last four overall. LaGrange shot 54.3 percent from the floor (38-for-70), as the Panthers have scored 93 or more points in each of their last three victories.

The Panthers recorded a season-high 22 assists.

"Saturday's game was a great team win," said Panthers Head Coach Kendal Wallace. "When we share the ball everything else seems to go well. We wanted to go inside early and often. We wanted to control the rebounds on both ends, and when we got stopped inside, we wanted to shoot well from the perimeter. We did all those things. We were deficient in our turnovers. We had nine at half, so our goal was 12 for the game. Unfortunately, we ended up with a total of 18. This was a much-needed win. Now, we have to get back to work with a quick turnaround and get ready to play a huge conference game versus Piedmont on Tuesday night at home."

The Tornados (5-17, 4-11 USA South) received a game-high 26 points from Cannon Lamb.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Panthers stormed out to a 6-0 lead off a dunk by Anderson, assisted by Youngblood, 2:33 into the first quarter. The Panthers never trailed in the game.
  • After Brevard evened the game at 6-6, LaGrange embarked on a 10-0 surge. Shepherd drilled a three-ball, and then sophomore guard Henry Blair finished an old-fashioned, 3-point play, giving the squad a 16-6 advantage with 13:28 on the clock.
  • LaGrange scored 28 of the final 41 points in the opening half. A steal and dunk by Blair extended the Panthers' cushion up to 51-30 with 1:12 remaining. Fifty-three seconds later, junior forward Kyle Brown finished a layup off a feed by Blair, sending LaGrange into halftime with a 23-point lead.

SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS:

  • LaGrange kept attacking with a 10-3 run to start the second half, as a jumper by Shepherd allowed the team to take a 63-33 advantage with 17:18 left.
  • The visitors opened a 31-point lead at 69-38 on a mid-range jumper by Shepherd with 14:53 remaining.
  • A dunk by Youngblood with 8:51 on the scoreboard put the Panthers in front by their largest margin, 82-49.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman forward Zac Hill gave the Panthers some great minutes off the bench. He finished with six points and four rebounds, shooting 3-for-5 from the floor in 13 minutes. The six points tied a career high for Hill.
  • Youngblood went 5-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
  • Brown and Blair combined for 19 bench points. LaGrange shot 13-for-15 from the free-throw line (86.7 percent).
  • The visitors led the rebounding category, 49-29, and held a 58-38 advantage in points in the paint.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Panthers improved to 6-0 all-time against Brevard, sweeping the two-game, regular-season series for the third-straight season.
  • During the first meeting between the two programs this season on Jan. 25, LaGrange claimed a 93-64 win in Mariotti Gym.

UP NEXT:

  • The Panthers will host USA South-rival Piedmont on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Mariotti.
