Men's Basketball: Panthers blow out Tornados 93-64 to stop five-game skid

Box Score

With six players scoring in double figures, LaGrange routed Brevard on Saturday in a USA South game in Mariotti Gym. The Panthers (4-13, 3-7 USA South) stopped a five-game losing streak.

Ronald Youngblood led all scorers with a career-high 18 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Youngblood was 6-for-7 from the floor. He added three assists and blocks each.

Kyle Brown came within a rebound of his own double-double. Brown finished with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Julian Cameron followed with 14 points. Henry Blair had 12 points, while Lincoln Anderson and Arthur Jones each had 11. For Jones, it was also a career high.

Coach Kendal Wallace
"Our emphasis today was to come out and pressure them. We wanted to pressure their ball handler and create some runovers, which I feel like we did in the first half. I felt like our pressure would hurt them a little bit. It is real tough to play back-to-back games. Last night, they played a pressing team, who pressed them the entire game. We knew they would be a little tired and wanted to try to take advantage of that. It was a good team win. We've talked the entire season about dropping egos and playing for one another. I feel like that's what happened today. I hope the guys feed off that and see what we can do as a team when those type of things happen. We had six players in double figures, which we have done in the past and why we have been so successful. I keep talking to the team about sharing the basketball, each person has his own shots to take and different times in the game to take those shots. I feel like we did that tonight. We did a good job of really working as a team tonight."

First half highlights

  • The Panthers never trailed in the game. Brevard (4-14, 3-8 USA South) tied the game briefly. Anderson's two free throws put LC up 4-2.
  • Leading 16-13, the Panthers went on a 12-2 run over a three-minute span to build a double-digit lead. Two free throws by Jones made it 28-15 with eight minutes left in the half.
  • The lead swelled to 20 points with a run of nine straight points. Cameron completed a three-point lead to start the run and Youngblood made the first of two free throws for a 37-17 lead.
  • Cameron's 3-pointer gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the half, 44-20. They took a 44-25 lead at the break.
  • The Panthers held Brevard to 32.1 percent shooting in the half.
  • LC made its first 13 free throws before missing one.

Second half highlights

  • Brevard never got closer than 17 points in the second half.
  • Trailing 68-51, the Tornados had an opportunity to cut into the lead further. But Brown made a steal, then drove the lane to push LC's lead back to 19.
  • After Brown's basket, the Panthers continued to build on the lead. Henry Blair's trey in the closing seconds gave the Panthers their largest lead of 31 points.
  • The Panthers shot 63 percent in the second half, finishing the game at 51.7 percent.
