Box Score Covenant topped LaGrange 66-61 in a USA South contest Saturday in Mariotti Gym. The Panthers slipped to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The Panthers got a game-high 16 points off the bench from Drew Vancerbrook. Alex Bonner added 11 points. Will Portlock and Bailey Spraggs each had 14 for the Scots (8-9, 2-5 USA South).
The Panthers forced 19 turnovers in the game but committed 16 of their own. LC was 4-of-15 at the free throw line, while Covenant converted 14-of-27 free throws.
"We beat ourselves tonight," Coach Kendal Wallace said. "Early in the game we built a 10-point lead. But then turned over on five of next nine possessions. We're really struggling right now."
The Panthers controlled much of the first half. Olson made a steal at the defensive end of the floor and converted it into an easy layup for a 26-16 lead with 5:58 left in the half. Covenant cut the deficit to one point, 28-27, by halftime.
In the second half, the Scots tied the game at 50. Vanderbrook hit a jumper, then followed with a 3-pointer to put the Panthers up 55-50.
LC still led 61-56 with 4:51 remaining after Elijah Adedoyin hit 1-of-2 free throws. The Panthers would not score again, going 0-for-4 at the line and from the floor down the stretch.
The Panthers host Huntingdon on Wednesday in a USA South game at 7:30 p.m.
