Box Score Mark Wagner scored 16 points off the bench as LaGrange downed Covenant 58-54 on Wednesday at Mariotti Gym. The Panthers upped their record to 9-10 with the non-conference win.
Wagner was one of only two Panthers in double figures. Dustin Baxter had 10 points.
Covenant (12-9) was led by Colton McGriff's 13 points. Joey Danek and Sam Bowman had 12 points each.
The Panthers led 50-43 with 6:37 left before the Scots rallied to tie the game at 50 on a layup by Bowman with 2:33 left. McGriff followed with a pair of free throws to put the Panthers down 52-50.
Baxter drilled a 3-pointer to put the Panthers ahead to stay, 53-52. Wagner would score the Panthers' final points by making 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Wagner made his first two to put the Panthers up 55-52. Bowman missed two free throws, but got his rebound and put back to trim the Panthers' lead to one, 55-54 with 29 seconds left.
The Scots got the ball back with a chance to retake the lead with 22 seconds left. McGriff, trapped in the corner, called timeout with the Scots out of timeouts resulting in a technical.
Wagner made one of the two technical free throws to make it 56-54. The Scots brought the ball down but Bowman was charged with a charge with three seconds left.
Forced to foul, the Scots fouled Wagner. The freshman made both of his free throws to clinch the 58-54 win.
The Panthers led 27-23 at halftime. They led the entire half and once by 10, 23-13, after Patrick Dugger's jumper in the lane. The Covenants got a 3-pointer by Callum Sears and Bowman scored on a layup to cut the deficit to four at the break.
The Panthers host conference-leading Christopher Newport on Saturday. The celebrate Senior Day on Sunday when they take on North Carolina Wesleyan in their final home game of the season.
