Box Score FERRUm, Va. - Marcus Jackson's touchdown reception in the fourth quarter lifted LaGrange to a 10-3 USA South win over Ferrum on Saturday. The win was also the first for Matt Mumme as the Panthers' new head coach.
The win upped the Panthers' overall record to 4-5 and improved to 4-3 in the conference. The Panthers will close out the 2013 season at Averett next Saturday.
Jackson's catch capped a 10-play 65-yard drive for the Panthers. The drive started with a 15-yard reception to Ed Russ from Graham Craig.
Later in the drive, Craig went to Jackson for a 14-yard completion to set up first and goal at the Ferrum 6-yard line. The pair hooked up again on third down for the touchdown from the 5 with 3:42 left in the game.
The Panther defense ended Ferrum's hopes on the ensuing possession. Brandon Penn intercepted Brandon Reynolds' pass and the Panthers were able to run out the clock. It was Penn's fourth interception of the season, setting a new school record.
The two teams played to a 3-3 tie in the first half. The Panthers' Will Jeffcoat hit from 22-yards out to cap a drive that started at the 15. Marquius Young, who rushed for a game-high 82 yards, had a 19-run and 18-yard reception on the drive.
Ferrum tied the game on Wesley Franklin's 30-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the half.
Craig finished the game 24 for 44 with two interceptions and 214 yards passing. Jackson had seven catches for 56 yards.
Andre Carter had 15 tackles to lead the defense. Carter now has broken his own school season record for tackles for the third straight season. He has 96 total tackles, including a team and conference best 17 tackles for loss.
In addition to Penn, Scott Chewning also had an interception.
