Football: Ferrum pulls away from Panthers for 48-24 win

FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 48-24 win over LaGrange on Saturday. The loss was the second straight in the USA South for the Panthers, who fell to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the USA South.

Quarterback Tim Reynolds threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the host Panthers. Reynolds had 264 yards passing and ran for another 92 yards.

LaGrange was led by senior running back Kent Gibson. Gibson ran for a game-high and tied his career high of 154 yards and a touchdown. He added 165 yards in kickoff returns for 319 all-purpose yards, breaking his own record of 290 yards set earlier this season against Huntingdon.

The Panthers finished the game with 371 yards of total offense, 238 coming on the ground. Quarterback Ed Russ threw for 105 yards, a touchdown and had three passes intercepted.

Ferrum turned two of the interceptions into touchdowns in building a 24-3 halftime lead. Defensive lineman Lynwood Picket returned an interception for 31 yards after Reynolds threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Makya Jackson.

The Panthers cut the deficit to seven points in the third quarter. They drove to the Ferrum 36 to on their opening drive of the second half.

Russ was intercepted by Raymond Hines, who fumbled the ball back to the Panthers after a hit by John Harris, who recovered the ball at the Ferrum 31.

The Panthers took advantage of the turnover. Gibson broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and covered the 31 yards on the first play to make it 24-10.

After the defense forced a three and out by Ferrum, the Panthers needed only three plays to sccore again. Gibson went around the left side for 58 yards to the Ferrum 2. Two plays later, Russ scored from the 1 to make it 24-17 with 7:34 left in the third quarter.

Ferrum came back with a 36-yard field goal by Scott Puschell to make it 27-17. Reynolds pushed the lead to 34-17 with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Derrick West on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Panthers cut Ferrum's lead to 10, 34-24, with under 10 minutes remaining. Russ threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Cody Darracott on a fourth and 8 play.

Reynolds answered for Ferrum to put the game out of reach. He threw 48 yards to Jackson to make it 41-24. Reynolds capped his day with a 47-yard touchdown run with 3:11 remaining for the 48-24 final.

The Panthers close out the 2012 season next Saturday at Greensboro.
